Chapter 8 - The Escape

The air in the room grew heavy with the smell of ozone and antiseptic as the security team swarmed the doorway. Evan didn't surrender easily. With a feral snarl, he hurled the remote at the IV pump, shattering the plastic casing in a desperate bid to force the machine to dump its contents.
"Get him!" I screamed, lunging for the IV line.
I didn't try to pull the needle out—that would have caused a fatal pressure change. Instead, I clamped the tubing with a pair of metal hemostats from my pocket, effectively sealing off the poison before the lethal dose could reach her heart.
Evan ducked under a security guard’s reach, barreling toward the window. The room was on the fourth floor, but there was a maintenance fire escape just outside. He smashed the glass with a heavy lamp, the sound echoing like a gunshot.
"He’s heading for the roof!" someone yelled.

I turned to Claire, whose skin was ghostly pale. "Stay with her!" I ordered the nurses. "And get Mia. Do not let anyone—no matter what they say—take her out of this building."
I didn't wait for a reply. I sprinted toward the stairwell, my lungs burning. This was no longer just a medical emergency; it was a desperate hunt. I could hear Evan’s heavy boots hitting the metal stairs above me. He was fast, driven by the frantic, animal instinct of a cornered man. If he reached the roof, he would vanish into the city, and the web of lies he had woven would be impossible to untangle from the shadows.
