Chapter 10 - Justice and Dawn

The morning sun crept over the horizon, painting the hospital windows in shades of gold and soft pink. The storm had passed, leaving the city washed clean.

In the NICU, the atmosphere was quiet, stripped of the frantic terror that had defined the last forty-eight hours. Claire sat in a recliner, her baby, Liam, nestled safely against her chest. She looked exhausted, her face gaunt, but the light in her eyes had returned—a sharp, clear, human intelligence that Evan could never extinguish.

Mia sat on the floor nearby, drawing in a sketchbook. She looked up as I entered, her gaze no longer guarded or fearful. She held out a pink bracelet. "He can't touch the red anymore," she said simply.

"No, he can't," I confirmed, kneeling beside her. "He's going to a place where he can't hurt anyone ever again."

The legal process had been swift. Mia’s hidden recordings, coupled with the forensic analysis of the blood samples and the tampered digital logs, had dismantled Evan’s entire reality. The police had found a hidden cache of sedatives and digital editing software in his home. His "masterpiece" of gaslighting had become the very evidence that ensured he would never see the outside of a prison cell.

Claire looked up at me, her hand resting on her son’s back. "The doctors said I was crazy," she whispered, her voice steady. "But you believed me."

"I believed the evidence," I said softly. "And I believed your daughter."

As I walked out of the hospital, the crisp air of the new day filled my lungs. The nightmare had ended, but the lesson remained: the most dangerous threats aren't always the ones we see coming; they are the ones hidden behind the guise of love. Claire would face a long road of healing, but she was free. The cycle of the "blood" had been broken, and for the first time in years, the Bennett family was finally, truly, their own.
