Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Estate

Over the next fortnight, a fragile peace settled over the Carter estate.

For the first time since Clara’s passing, the dark, oppressive atmosphere of the grand house began to lift. Maisie and Rosie were eating regularly, gaining weight, and—most miraculously—sleeping through the night. Elise’s unconventional methods continued, though she kept them grounded in deep care and genuine affection.

Daniel found himself observing her from the shadows. He would watch through the cracked door of the playroom as she sat on the rug, reading stories with dramatic, animated voices, or teaching the girls how to reach for colorful wooden blocks. He caught himself smiling once—a strange, foreign sensation that frightened him so deeply he immediately retreated to his study.

He was not allowed to move on. Moving on felt like betraying Clara.

Clara Vance had been the daughter of old money, a radiant, fiery woman whose sudden death in a tragic highway collision during a torrential thunderstorm four months ago had shattered Daniel's world. Her loss had left a void that no amount of wealth could fill.

The fragile peace of the household was shattered on a gloomy Thursday afternoon.

The heavy oak doors of the foyer echoed as double tires crunched over the gravel driveway outside. Daniel was in his ground-floor office reviewing quarterly reports for Carter Enterprises when his butler, Harrison, knocked gently on the door frame.

"Mr. Carter," Harrison said, his face pale and tight. "Your mother-in-law and brother-in-law have arrived."

Daniel’s jaw clenched. Eleanor Vance and her son, Julian Vance.

Before Daniel could stand, the office door was pushed wider, and Eleanor stepped inside. Clad in a tailored black suit with a pearl necklace that looked like a row of polished teeth, Eleanor radiated cold authority. Julian followed behind her—slender, sharp-eyed, wearing an arrogant smirk that made Daniel’s fists clench instinctively.

"Daniel," Eleanor greeted, her tone devoid of warmth. "You look dreadful."

"Eleanor. Julian," Daniel replied, standing up behind his executive desk. "To what do I owe this unannounced visit?"

"Unannounced? We are visiting my granddaughters," Eleanor snapped, walking toward the fireplace and inspecting the mantle with a gloved finger. "Or what is left of my daughter's legacy in this mausoleum."

Julian leaned against the bookcase, crossing his arms. "We’ve been hearing disturbing rumors, Daniel. Word among the elite agencies in the city is that you’ve gone through four nannies in four months. And now you’ve hired some uncertified girl with zero high-society references."

"Elise is more than capable," Daniel said coldly. "The girls are thriving under her care. Better than they have since Clara died."

"Thriving?" Eleanor chuckled venomously. "They are four months old, Daniel! They don't even know who they are, and you have left them in the hands of a commoner. Clara’s estate trust activates on the twins' first birthday. Fifty million dollars in managed assets. My family will not stand by and watch those children be raised by incompetence while you rot in your own grief."

Daniel stepped out from behind his desk, his posture imposing. "This is my house. They are my daughters. Get out."

"We are filing for co-guardianship next week," Julian chimed in, his voice dripping with malice. "We have documented your erratic behavior, your isolation, and your inability to maintain stable care staff. Unless, of course, you hand over the management of Clara's trust to the Vance Board voluntarily."

The truth was finally out. The Vances didn't care about the girls' welfare. They cared about the massive fortune Clara had left behind in trust for her daughters—a trust that Julian desperately needed to bail out his failing real estate ventures.

"Get out of my house," Daniel growled, his voice a dangerous whisper. "Before I have security throw you through the gates."

Eleanor glared at him, her eyes burning with pure venom. "Enjoy your temporary victory, Daniel. We will take those babies from you."
