Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

Within twenty minutes, the estate's private security detail had isolated the breach.
The internal digital lock on the service stairs had been accessed using an old master keycard belonging to the house management staff. The culprit was Thomas, a newly hired junior maintenance assistant. When confronted by Daniel and his head of security in the basement staff room, Thomas broke down in terror, dropping to his knees and confessing everything.
Julian Vance had paid him fifteen thousand dollars in cash to bypass the nursery security feed, slip into the room while Elise was in the kitchen, drop the pill bottle next to her bag, and tamper with the formula to trigger an allergic skin reaction in the babies using a mild irritant.
The twins were evaluated by Daniel’s private pediatrician, who arrived within the hour. Aside from temporary distress and skin redness from the irritant, they were completely unharmed.
In the quiet hours of 4:00 a.m., after the police had taken Thomas into custody and the house was secured, Daniel sat in the dimly lit library.
A knock sounded on the door. Elise stepped inside, carrying two mugs of warm tea. She had changed out of her clothes and looked exhausted, deep dark circles under her eyes, but her expression was one of quiet resilience.
"They're fast asleep," she said softly, setting a mug on his desk. "The doctor gave them a mild soothing ointment. They'll be fine."
Daniel looked at the mug, then up at Elise. "I almost blamed you," he admitted, his voice rough with guilt. "For three seconds, I looked at you and believed the worst."
"You were protecting your children," Elise replied, sitting down across from him. "Any loving father would have reacted that way."
"I apologized to you in my head, but I need to say it out loud," Daniel said, leaning forward, placing his hands on the desk. "I'm sorry, Elise. You saved them tonight by refusing to panic. If you hadn't checked the formula before feeding them, they would have been hurt."
Elise stared into her tea. "Julian came to me three days ago," she confessed quietly. "He offered me two hundred thousand dollars to lie about you in court. He threatened to expose my past."
Daniel’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Your past?"
Elise took a deep breath and told him everything—about her younger brother's childhood illness, the frantic rush to the hospital, the mislabeled prescription, and the bitter smear campaign that almost ruined her life before she proved her innocence.
"I know what it's like to have people judge you based on a tragedy you couldn't control," Elise said, her eyes meeting his with profound intensity. "That's why I knew what you were going through, Mr. Carter. When I looked at you on my first day here, I didn't see an arrogant billionaire. I saw a man drowning in grief, trying to hold his world together with broken hands."
Daniel felt a lump form in his throat. For months, everyone in high society had treated him with either fake pity or predatory greed. Nobody had truly seen him.
"Clara didn't die of a simple accident," Daniel blurted out, the secret bursting from his chest before he could stop it.
Elise froze. "What?"
Daniel stood up, walking to the window that overlooked the rain-swept grounds. "The night Clara died, she was driving to her mother’s estate to confront Julian. She had found evidence that Julian was embezzling tens of millions from the family charity fund. Her brake lines failed on the mountain pass."
Elise gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.
"The police ruled it a mechanical failure due to poor maintenance," Daniel said, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "I couldn't prove otherwise. But tonight... tonight Julian proved how far he is willing to go. He didn't just want the trust fund, Elise. He wants me destroyed so I never look deeper into Clara's death."
Elise stood up, walking across the room until she was standing beside him at the window. She didn't hesitate. She reached out and placed her soft hand over his clenched fist.

"Then we fight him together," she said fiercely. "For Clara. And for the girls."
Daniel looked down at her hand, then into her determined, beautiful eyes. For the first time in four months, the ice around his heart completely shattered.
