Chapter 7 - The Custody Battle Begins

The courtroom of the New York Family Court was suffocatingly hot despite the humming air conditioning.

Eleanor and Julian Vance sat at the petitioner's table, flanked by three high-priced, shark-like attorneys in bespoke suits. On the other side sat Daniel, calm and stoic, with his lead counsel, Arthur Pendelton, and Elise sitting directly behind him.

The judge, a stern woman named Honorable Patricia Vance (no relation), slammed her gavel onto the wooden desk.

"We are here to evaluate the petition for emergency custody of Maisie and Rosie Carter, filed by Eleanor Vance," Judge Patricia announced. "Counsel, present your arguments."

The Vance family’s lead lawyer stood up immediately, putting on a grand show for the court. He painted Daniel as an unhinged, grieving recluse who was unfit to father two infant children. He brought up Daniel's long work hours, his firing of multiple nannies, and the recent arrest of the household maintenance worker as proof of a "chaotic and dangerous home environment."

"Your Honor," the attorney declared pompously. "Mr. Carter’s home is a fortress of instability. Just days ago, a dangerous security breach occurred inside the nursery itself! Mr. Carter cannot guarantee the safety of these precious infants. Mrs. Eleanor Vance, a respected philanthropist, is prepared to offer them a stable, loving environment."

When it was the defense's turn, Arthur Pendelton stood up smoothly.

"Your Honor, the security breach mentioned by my esteemed colleague was not an act of negligence by Mr. Carter. It was a pre-meditated criminal conspiracy orchestrated by Julian Vance himself."

Gasps echoed through the gallery.

Julian leaped up from his chair. "That's slander!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" Judge Patricia barked, slamming her gavel. "One more outburst and I will hold you in contempt."

Arthur submitted the sworn confession of Thomas, the maintenance worker, along with the CCTV footage showing Thomas meeting with Julian Vance in a parking garage two days before the incident, receiving a thick envelope of cash.

Julian’s face turned gray. Eleanor turned to glare at her son, her knuckles white.

"Furthermore," Arthur continued, "we would like to call our primary witness to the stand: Miss Elise Navarro."

Elise took a deep breath, adjusted her modest navy blazer, and walked toward the witness box. She took the oath, her voice clear and unwavering.

"Miss Navarro," Arthur asked gently. "You have been the full-time caregiver for Maisie and Rosie Carter for nearly a month. Can you describe Mr. Carter’s interaction with his daughters?"

Elise looked past the lawyers, past the judge, and looked straight at Daniel.

"Mr. Carter is a father who was shattered by loss," Elise spoke softly, but her words echoed clearly through the courtroom. "When his wife died, he didn't know how to carry his pain. But he never, for a single second, stopped loving his daughters. Every night, after working eighteen hours, he sits by their cribs just to watch them sleep. He put his own grief aside to protect them."

She turned to look directly at Eleanor and Julian.

"I have seen people who care about those children, and I have seen people who care about their money," Elise said boldly. "Daniel Carter would burn his entire empire to the ground if it meant keeping those girls safe. He is not just a fit father, Your Honor. He is the only father they need."

A heavy silence fell over the courtroom.

Judge Patricia looked over her glasses at Elise, nodding slowly. She then turned her sharp gaze onto Julian and Eleanor Vance.

"Court is adjourned for a two-hour recess," Judge Patricia declared. "When we return, I will issue my ruling. And I advise Mr. Julian Vance to have his criminal defense attorney present."
