Chapter 8 - The Dark Night

The court recess was supposed to bring relief, but fate had other plans.
As Daniel, Elise, and Arthur walked out into the private underground parking garage of the courthouse to await the final ruling, the lights in the garage suddenly flickered and died, plunging the concrete space into shadow.
"What's going on?" Arthur muttered, pulling out his phone.
Before anyone could react, heavy footsteps echoed across the concrete. Two muscular men in dark jackets stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, blocking the exit.
Behind them walked Julian Vance, his hair wild, his eyes bloodshot with desperate madness. He held a heavy blue envelope in his hand and a small revolver in the other.
"Julian!" Daniel stepped forward instantly, putting himself between Julian and Elise. "Have you completely lost your mind?!"
"You ruined me!" Julian screamed, his voice echoing off the concrete walls like a lunatic's. "The police are waiting upstairs to arrest me! My accounts are frozen! I have nothing left!"
"You did this to yourself," Daniel said coldly, keeping his hands visible while calculating the distance between them.
"Sign it!" Julian threw the blue envelope at Daniel’s feet. "It's a full transfer of Clara's trust assets to an off-shore entity under my name! Sign it, or none of you leave this garage alive!"
"You're insane, Julian," Elise said, stepping up beside Daniel, her heart hammering against her ribs, but refusing to back down. "You think you can shoot us in a courthouse garage and walk away?"
"I don't care anymore!" Julian roared, aiming the gun directly at Daniel’s chest. "My life is over anyway! If I don't get that money, I’m going to prison for the rest of my life! Sign it, Daniel!"
In that split second, Elise noticed something Julian hadn't—a security patrol car cruising slowly down the upper ramp toward their section, its headlights sweeping across the dark walls.
Without a second thought, Elise lunged forward, slamming her heavy handbag into Julian’s armed wrist.
BANG!
The gunshot exploded in the enclosed space, deafeningly loud. The bullet ricocheted wildly off the concrete floor.
"Elise!" Daniel shouted.
Julian stumbled back, dropping the gun. Before he could retrieve it, Daniel drove his shoulder into Julian’s chest, tackling him to the floor with furious, explosive strength. The two men wrestled fiercely on the hard ground, but Daniel’s rage was unmatched. He landed two swift, powerful blows, pinning Julian to the floor and knocking the breath out of him.
Julian’s hired thugs tried to intervene, but the blare of police sirens suddenly drowned out the noise as three police cruisers sped down the ramp, tires screeching, surrounding the area with flashing red and blue lights.
Armed police officers poured out of the vehicles, guns drawn. "Hands in the air! Don't move!"
The thugs dropped to their knees immediately.
Daniel pulled himself off Julian, panting heavily, his eyes frantically searching the dark garage. "Elise! Are you hurt?!"
Elise was leaning against a pillar, clutching her left arm, her face pale, but she shook her head with a faint, reassuring smile. "I'm okay... it just grazed my sleeve. Is... is it over?"
May you like
Daniel rushed over, pulling her into his arms with a fierce, desperate hold. He didn't care about the police, the court, or the press that was gathering outside. He squeezed her tightly against his chest, feeling her heartbeat, tears finally leaking from his eyes.
"It's over," Daniel whispered into her hair, his voice breaking. "It's finally over."
