Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Marble

Two months passed, and the cold estate began to change.
Amelia threw open the heavy velvet drapes, letting sunlight flood the marble halls. She brought colorful play mats, wooden blocks, and finger paints into the nursery. She insisted on cooking Mateo’s baby food herself, filling the cold kitchen with the rich scents of pureed vegetables, apple cinnamon, and fresh herbs.
Mateo blossomed. The pale, anxious child was now a chubby, giggling boy who was crawling at terrifying speeds across the hardwood floors.
And then there was Luchiano.
True to his promise, the feared mob boss returned home every evening at six o'clock sharp. He would strip off his gun holster, roll up his pristine white sleeves, and sit cross-legged on the nursery rug, letting Mateo pull his expensive silk ties or stack wooden blocks on his knees.
Amelia would sit nearby, pretending to organize Mateo's clothes, but her eyes were constantly drawn to Luchiano.
Without the terrifying armor of his suit and his weapons, Luchiano was strikingly handsome. He had a rich, deep laugh that made her stomach do strange, delicious flips. She saw the profound gentleness in his hands when he held his son—hands she knew were capable of brutal violence, yet held the child as if he were made of fine crystal.
"He tried to eat a crayon today," Amelia said one evening, laughing softly as she handed Luchiano a damp cloth to wipe blue wax off Mateo's chin.
"Did he?" Luchiano chuckled, wiping his son's face while Mateo squealed in delight. "A future artist. Or a corporate saboteur."
Their fingers brushed as Amelia took the cloth back. An electric shock rippled through the air between them. Amelia’s breath caught, her eyes meeting Luchiano’s. He didn't pull his hand away. His dark eyes darkened further, dropping to her lips.
"Amelia," he murmured, his deep voice wrapping around her name like velvet. "You've brought something into this house that I thought was dead forever."
"What's that?" she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Life," he replied softly.
Before either could move closer, the heavy oak doors of the nursery were thrown open. Dominic rushed into the room, his face pale and sweating.
"Boss," Dominic rasped, glancing nervously at Amelia. "We have a situation. Don Falco just called an emergency council meeting of the Five Families. Someone leaked our port shipment routes in Brooklyn. Federal agents seized thirty million dollars in inventory an hour ago."
The warmth in the room vanished instantly.
Luchiano stood up, his jaw clenching into iron. The gentle father instantly disappeared, replaced by the terrifying Wolf of New York.
"Who was the leak?" Luchiano growled, his voice dropping an octave into pure malice.
"We don't know yet," Dominic swallowed hard. "But Falco is claiming you set it up to cut the other families out of the distribution."
Luchiano reached into his suit jacket, pulling his gun holster back on with practiced, terrifying speed. He turned to Amelia, his dark eyes fierce with protection.
"Amelia, lock the nursery doors. Do not let anyone inside except Dominic or myself," Luchiano ordered sternly. "No matter what you hear."
Amelia stood up, holding Mateo tightly to her chest. "Luchiano... please be careful."

Luchiano stopped at the door. He looked back at her, his expression softening for a fraction of a second as he saw the genuine fear and care in her eyes.
"I always am," he promised softly before vanishing into the dark corridor.
