Chapter 6 - Defending the Sanctuary

Back at the estate, the storm raged outside, rattling the floor-to-ceiling windows of the nursery.

Amelia sat on the floor, reading a storybook to Mateo, when the power suddenly cut out. The grand chandelier died, plunging the mansion into pitch-black shadow.

Mateo let out a small whimper of fear.

"Shh, it's okay, sweet boy," Amelia whispered, pulling the toddler into her lap. "It's just the rain."

Then she heard it.

CRACK.

The distant sound of shattering glass came from the floor below, followed by the heavy, metallic thud of tactical boots against marble.

Amelia’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She remembered Luchiano’s warning: “Do not let anyone inside.”

She didn't freeze. She didn't panic. The instincts of a woman protecting her child took over completely.

She grabbed Mateo, rushed into the master bathroom attached to the nursery, and placed him inside a reinforced linen closet hidden behind the mirror.

"Mateo, listen to me," Amelia whispered fiercely, pressing a finger to her lips. "Play the quiet game. Not a single peep until Mommy comes back, okay?"

The boy nodded wide-eyed, clutching his stuffed bear, pressing his tiny hands over his mouth.

Amelia closed the closet door, locking it from the outside. She grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the vanity table and stepped out into the dark nursery, hiding behind the heavy velvet drapes near the entrance door.

A second later, the nursery lock was blown apart with a suppressed gunshot—PHUT!

The heavy oak door swung open. A tall, muscular man in a tactical mask stepped into the room, raising a suppressed submachine gun, scanning the dark cribs.

"Where is the kid?" the man muttered into his radio headset. "Room is empty."

"Check the bathroom," a voice crackled through his earpiece.

As the intruder walked past the drapes, Amelia didn't hesitate. She swung the heavy brass candlestick with all her strength, smashing it directly into the side of the gunman's neck—CRACK!

The man grunted in shock, stumbling sideways. Before he could raise his weapon, Amelia lunged forward, shoving him with all her weight against the heavy hardwood crib. The man hit his head against the sharp wooden post and collapsed unconscious onto the floor.

Amelia grabbed his dropped submachine gun, her hands trembling violently, though she held it pointed at the doorway just as she had seen in movies.

Suddenly, another heavy set of footsteps sprinted up the stairs.

Amelia raised the weapon, her finger tightening on the trigger. "Stay back! I'll shoot!" she screamed into the dark.

"Amelia! It's me!"

Luchiano burst through the doorway, his gun drawn, his face drenched in rain and sweat. He saw the unconscious mercenary on the floor, the heavy weapon in Amelia’s hands, and the fierce, protective fire burning in her hazel eyes.

Luchiano dropped his gun, rushing across the room, pulling her into his arms. "Amelia! Are you hurt? Where is Mateo?"

Amelia dropped the heavy gun, collapsing against his chest, her strength instantly giving out as tears overflowed her eyes. "He's safe... he's in the closet... he was so brave..."

Luchiano ran into the bathroom, threw open the hidden linen door, and pulled his son into his arms. Mateo let out a happy squeal, wrapping his chubby arms around his father's neck.

Luchiano held both Amelia and Mateo against his body, his chest heaving with overwhelming emotion. He kissed Mateo’s head, then reached out, cupping Amelia’s tear-stained face, pulling her into a desperate, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, fear, and profound relief.

"I’m never letting anyone hurt you," Luchiano vowed against her lips, his dark eyes filled with fierce, absolute devotion. "Either of you."
