Chapter 8 - A Promise in the Park

A month later, the autumn air in Central Park was crisp and cold, painting the oak leaves in shades of deep gold, crimson, and amber.
Amelia walked along the paved paths near the lake, pushing Mateo in a sleek stroller. The boy was bundled up in a tiny red winter coat, giggling happily as he pointed at the ducks swimming along the water's edge.
Walking beside her was Luchiano. He wasn't wearing his usual mafia uniform; instead, he wore a dark wool overcoat and a cozy grey scarf. His arm was wrapped comfortably around Amelia’s waist, pulling her close against his side as they walked.
"He called me 'Mom' yesterday," Amelia said softly, a blush touching her cheeks as she looked at Luchiano. "When we were playing with his stacking cups... he looked up and said Mamma."
Luchiano stopped walking. He turned Amelia around to face him, looking down into her hazel eyes with an intensity that made her pulse race.
"He knows who his mother is, Amelia," Luchiano said gently, his fingers caressing her cheek. "A mother isn't the woman who gives birth to you in a hospital room. It's the woman who stays when the storm comes. It's the woman who holds you when you're crying, who protects you when there's danger, and who fills a cold house with love."
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
Amelia’s breath caught in her throat.
Luchiano dropped to one knee right on the cobblestone path, unmindful of the pedestrians passing by or his tailored pants. He opened the box to reveal a magnificent, cushion-cut diamond ring flanked by two delicate sapphires.
"Amelia Rossi," Luchiano said, his voice raw with a deep, profound vulnerability. "You walked into a restaurant a year ago and quieted my crying son. But what you really did was quiet the storm inside my soul. You saved us both."
He looked up at her, his dark eyes shining with devotion.
"Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife? Will you let me love you, protect you, and build a real family with you forever?"
Tears of pure joy welled up in Amelia’s eyes, spilling over her cheeks. She dropped to her knees right in front of him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.
"Yes!" she sobbed happily into his neck. "Yes, Luchiano! A thousand times yes!"

Luchiano pulled her close, kissing her deeply as the autumn leaves drifted down around them. Mateo clapped his small hands from his stroller, squealing with delight: "Mamma! Papa!"
Luchiano broke the kiss, laughing softly as he pulled Mateo out of the stroller, holding both his son and his future wife close against his heart.
