Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Hudson

Three hundred miles north of Manhattan, nestled deep within the mist-shrouded ridges of the Hudson Valley, an old stone estate sat hidden behind wrought-iron gates and overgrown cedar trees. The property belonged to an eccentric antique dealer whom Naomi Reyes had protected during a messy federal embezzlement probe three years prior—a debt now repaid in absolute, unbroken silence.

Inside the sprawling, fire-lit kitchen, the rain tapped softly against the leaded windowpanes.

Camille sat in a wingback armchair upholstered in faded velvet, rocking a sleeping Leo against her chest. The firelight cast amber shadows across her face, softening the sharp, exhausted lines carved by the past forty-eight hours. Across the room, Naomi was busy heating a bottle of formula on an antique cast-iron stove, her movements brisk and efficient.

"The driver confirmed," Naomi said without turning around. "He dropped the decoy vehicle off near the Vermont border and doubled back through the state parks. As far as Adrian’s digital footprint trackers are concerned, we vanished into Canada."

Camille looked down at her son. In the dim light, Leo’s tiny chest rose and fell in perfect, rhythmic harmony. "He didn't chase us, Naomi."

Naomi paused, spoon in hand, and turned around. "What do you mean he didn't chase us? He’s Adrian Vance. His whole life is built on hunting down what belongs to him."

"He knows how to track a target," Camille said softly, her thumb gently stroking the back of Leo’s tiny hand. "But he doesn't know how to catch a ghost that doesn't want to be found. He didn't send his men. I felt it... when we left the garage. There was no tail."

"Maybe he’s regrouping," Naomi warned, walking over to hand the warm bottle to Camille. "Maybe he’s playing the long game. You know how he operates. He lets people think they’ve escaped just so he can watch them build a new life before he kicks the walls down."

"Let him try," Camille murmured, feeding the baby. Yet, even as she said the words, a heavy, sinking ache settled deep within her chest.

She didn't just escape a tyrant; she had fled a man she had deeply, irrevocably loved for seven years. The man who had held her hand through her mother’s funeral; the man who had whispered poetry in the dark when the stress of his underground empire threatened to suffocate her. The photograph in Sicily—Isabelle Voss standing on that sunlit terrace in white silk—had shattered the illusion, but it hadn't erased the memories. Every time she looked at Leo’s dark eyelashes and stubborn little mouth, she saw Adrian staring back at her.

"You're thinking about him," Naomi said gently, pulling up a wooden stool to sit beside the chair.

"I'm thinking about how easy it would have been for him to stay," Camille replied, her voice barely audible over the crackle of the hearth. "Just one day. One flight. If he had chosen us over that villa, none of this would be happening."

"He made his bed, Camille," Naomi said fiercely, reaching out to squeeze her shoulder. "And now we build ours. You have a safe haven, a legal trust fund set up in your maiden name that even Adrian’s forensic accountants can't touch, and a son who will never have to look over his shoulder wondering if his father's enemies are coming for him."

Before Camille could answer, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the front hallway—a heavy thud against the reinforced oak front door.

Both women froze. Naomi’s hand instantly dropped toward the heavy iron poker resting beside the hearth.

"Stay here," Naomi whispered, rising to her feet with predatory grace.

"No," Camille said, standing up with Leo clutched securely against her heart. "If they found us, hiding won't help."
