Chapter 6 - The Threshold of Truth

The heavy oak front door of the Hudson Valley estate slowly creaked open, revealing not an army of armed enforcers or rival syndicate hitmen, but a single man standing alone in the pouring rain.

Adrian Vance wore no coat. The cold mountain wind whipped through his dark hair, and his designer suit was soaked through to the skin, but he didn't shiver. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on the doorway where Camille stood with Naomi standing protectively slightly behind her, holding an iron poker.

"How did you find me?" Camille asked, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to keep it steady. She held Leo tighter against her chest, as if shielding him from the very sight of his father.

"It wasn't hard to trace the diplomatic plates," Adrian said, his voice rough, stripped of all arrogance and cold authority. He took a slow step forward across the threshold, raising his empty hands to show he carried no weapons, no threat, only an overwhelming, desperate vulnerability. "May I come in, Camille? Please."

Naomi stepped forward, her face twisted with fury. "You have a lot of nerve showing up here after—"

"Naomi, wait," Camille interrupted, her gaze locked onto Adrian’s. She saw the dark circles under his eyes, the absolute exhaustion carved into his features, and something else—something raw and terrifyingly genuine. "Let him speak."

Adrian crossed the threshold, stepping into the warm, fire-lit hallway. He stopped a few feet away from them, his chest rising and falling as he looked down at the tiny bundle in Camille’s arms.

"I didn't go to Sicily to be with Isabelle," Adrian said, his voice barely above a whisper, directed entirely at his wife. "She staged that photograph, Camille. She and my cousin Marcus. They wanted to fracture our empire from the inside out by making you believe I had abandoned you for another woman."

Camille stared at him, her heart skipping a beat. "Staged? Adrian, I saw the terrace. I saw the way she looked at the camera, the way—"

"She was sitting at an empty table," Adrian interrupted, stepping a fraction closer. "Marcus confessed four hours ago. I stripped him of everything he owned and put him on a freighter to the southern hemisphere before sunrise. Isabelle’s accounts have been frozen, her villa seized, and her connections dismantled. She is nothing now."

"And why should I believe you?" Camille asked, a tear finally escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek, hot and sharp. "You still went to Italy. You still left me alone in that hospital room while I was fourteen hours into labor. Even if the photograph was a trap, you walked away when I needed you most."

Adrian flinched as if struck by a physical blow. He dropped his gaze to the floor, his shoulders slumping under the weight of an unpayable debt.

"You're right," Adrian said, his voice breaking for the first time in their marriage. "I chose business. I chose to believe that I could balance the underworld and my family without consequence. I told myself first labors take time, that Dante would call if it became an emergency. But the truth is... I was coward enough to think I had more time."

He looked back up, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "When Dante called me in that kitchen and told me my son had been born... I felt the ground drop out from under me. I flew back instantly. I brought flowers. I brought a bracelet. But none of that matters because I missed the only moment that ever truly mattered in my entire life."

Camille stood frozen in the center of the room. The fire crackled softly, casting long, dancing shadows across the old wooden floorboards. For years, she had known Adrian as a monolith—a man of stone and iron who never apologized, never explained, and never showed weakness. To see him standing here, soaked in rain and stripped of his armor, asking for forgiveness was a transformation she had never imagined possible.

"I don't want your empire, Adrian," Camille whispered, her voice cracking. "I don't want your money, your protection, or your shadow. I want a husband who stays. I want a father who is there when our son learns to walk."

"Then take him," Adrian whispered, taking one final step forward and dropping slowly to one knee on the hardwood floor, looking up at his wife and his son. "Take everything I am. Dismantle my empire brick by brick if it proves I'm yours. I will never walk away again, Camille. I swear to you on my life."
