Chapter 9 - Echoes of the Past

Two years later, the Hudson Valley estate was filled with the sound of running footsteps, echoing laughter, and the bright, infectious chatter of a two-year-old boy chasing a golden retriever across the manicured lawn.

Adrian sat on the wide wooden porch in a weathered rocking chair, holding a cup of black coffee in one hand while watching Leo chase the dog toward the old oak tree. The sharp, tailored suits had been replaced by comfortable linen shirts and worn boots, and the cold, impenetrable wall that once defined the name Adrian Vance had dissolved into something far stronger: a man deeply rooted in his family.

From the screen door, Camille stepped out carrying a tray of sliced apples and juice boxes. She walked over, setting the tray on the side table before leaning against the porch railing to watch their son.

"He's getting too fast," Camille remarked, a fond smile touching her lips. "I give it another six months before he’s climbing up onto the roof."

"He gets that stubborn streak from his mother," Adrian replied, looking up at her with a gaze full of quiet adoration.

Camille smiled, walking over to sit on the arm of his rocking chair. Adrian instantly wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close so she could rest against his shoulder.

"You got a letter this morning," Camille said softly, her fingers tracing the edge of his sleeve.

Adrian raised an eyebrow. "From whom?"

"Dante. He’s managing the transition of the remaining shipping routes into a legitimate logistics corporation based out of Montreal. He said the old syndicate board officially dissolved last week. No trials, no violence, no fallout. The transition is complete."

Adrian nodded slowly, staring out past the lawn toward the horizon where the river wound its way through the valley. "It’s finally over. Every last piece of that old life."

"Do you miss it?" Camille asked, turning her face to look directly into his eyes. "The power? The control? The rush of running a city from the shadows?"

Adrian reached up, gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. He looked down at her, then out toward their son laughing under the golden autumn sunlight.

"I spent my entire life believing that power meant having the ability to destroy anyone who stood in my way," Adrian said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with absolute conviction. "I was wrong. True power isn't about what you can control or destroy. It’s having everything you love right here... and knowing you will never, ever have to walk away again."

Camille leaned down, pressing her lips softly against his. It was a kiss free of the ghosts of Sicily, free of hospital fluorescent lights, and free of the fear that had once threatened to tear their world apart.
