Chapter 5 - The Architect of Lies

Back in Manhattan, the penthouse office of Adrian Vance was lit only by the amber glow of the city skyline through floor-to-ceiling glass. The room was deathly quiet save for the rhythmic clicking of a Zippo lighter opening and closing in Adrian’s hand.

Across the mahogany desk sat Dante Cruz and a man named Marcus Vance—Adrian’s estranged cousin, who managed the family’s international shipping logistics out of Geneva. Marcus looked nervous, shifting his weight constantly in the leather chair as he eyed the cold fury radiating from Adrian’s posture.

"Let’s go through it one more time, Marcus," Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Slowly. So I don't forget a single detail."

Marcus swallowed hard, clearing his throat. "It... it wasn't supposed to go that far, Adrian. The photo was a tactical play. Isabelle wanted to secure her position in the European syndicate; she knew that if the board thought you were distracted by a newborn heir and an American wife, they’d try to squeeze you out of the Mediterranean shipping lanes."

"So she staged a photograph," Adrian said, the Zippo snapping shut with a sharp clack. "She invited herself to the villa in Sicily, positioned herself on the terrace at precisely 8:00 AM, and had one of her contacts upload it to a public luxury account where she knew Camille’s algorithms would pick it up within minutes."

"She didn't think Camille would go into early labor," Marcus stammered, raising his hands defensively. "She thought you’d finish your meetings down there, fly back in a week, and smooth it over. None of us knew Camille’s pregnancy was high-risk."

Adrian slowly stood up from his desk. He didn't shout. He didn't smash a glass. He simply walked around the mahogany barrier until he was standing directly over Marcus.

"You knew I was waiting for my firstborn child," Adrian whispered, his face inches from his cousin's. "You knew that my wife was due any day. And you stood by while Isabelle orchestrated a lie designed to break my marriage apart."

"Adrian, I'm family—"

"You were family," Adrian corrected, his voice dropping into a dead, arctic whisper. He looked at Dante. "Take Marcus down to the basement vaults. Strip him of his shares, his titles, and every cent he holds in the Syndicate accounts. Put him on a freighter to South America tonight. If he ever sets foot in North America again, throw him overboard."

"Boss—!" Marcus shrieked as two enforcers materialized from the shadows of the doorway, hauling him out of the chair like a ragdoll.

As the heavy oak doors closed behind them, Dante lingered for a moment, looking at Adrian with a mixture of respect and caution. "And Isabelle?"

Adrian turned back toward the window, watching the rain streak down the glass just as it had streamed down the windows of Mercy General hospital four days ago.

"Isabelle is still in Sicily," Adrian said coldly. "Leave her there. Let her enjoy the sunlit terrace, the lemon trees, and the empty villa. Because by tomorrow morning, every asset, every account, and every connection she holds in Europe will be frozen, seized, and liquidated. She wanted an empire built on illusion? I'll leave her with nothing."

Dante nodded once. "Understood. And Camille?"

Adrian reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. Inside sat the diamond bracelet he had brought to the hospital—the one he never got to give her.

"She thinks I betrayed her," Adrian said, his fingers tracing the cold metal of the clasp. "She thinks I chose a lie over my own family. And she’s hiding in a place where she thinks I can't reach her." He paused, a dark, resolute light entering his eyes. "Prepare the private jet, Dante. We’re going to the Hudson Valley."
