Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Raven’s Gate

A tear-gas canister bounced across the hardwood floor, releasing a thick, choking cloud of white smoke into the living room.
"Get down!" Marcus bellowed, grabbing both children and tackling them behind the heavy oak dining table just as the front door was shattered off its hinges with a hydraulic ram.
Heavy, booted footsteps echoed through the smoke. Two men clad in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles strode into the apartment, their submachine guns raised.
"Secure the specimens!" a harsh voice barked through a radio comms unit. "Dr. Vance wants both children intact! Eliminate the father!"
Fear vanished from Marcus’s mind, replaced by the primal instinct of a father protecting his children. Reaching under the edge of the dining table, he grabbed a heavy iron fire poker he had retrieved from the fireplace moments earlier.
As the first operative rounded the corner of the table, Marcus swung the iron bar with all his strength, striking the guard hard across his helmeted visor. The visor shattered, and the operative went down with a heavy thud.
The second operative raised his rifle, but Leo suddenly screamed—a high-pitched, piercing sound of pure terror.
Instantly, Maya let out an identical gasp of pain, clutching her chest. The biological link between the twins flared to life; the adrenaline surging through Leo's veins echoed directly into Maya's nervous system.
"Run to the fire escape!" Marcus yelled, hurling a heavy wooden chair into the second guard's chest, knocking him backward into the hallway.
Marcus scooped up both children, ignoring the stinging smoke in his eyes, and sprinted through the kitchen toward the back balcony. He threw the metal door open, exposing them to the driving rain of the night storm.
They scrambled down the metal fire escape into the dark alleyway behind the building. Marcus's heart was hammering like a sledgehammer against his ribs. He knew his apartment was compromised. His old life was over. The Vance family’s reach extended into the city's highest institutions, and there was nowhere left to hide except the one place Vance would never expect them to attack.
They ducked into an ancient, rust-covered station wagon Marcus kept parked in a rental garage three blocks away—a car registered under a dead uncle's name that had sat untouched for five years.
Marcus started the engine, pulling out into the dark streets just as three black SUVs screeched to a halt outside his apartment building.
"Where are we going, Daddy?" Maya asked, shivering in the passenger seat as she held Leo’s hand across the central console.

Marcus reached into his jacket, pulling out the faded photograph of the stone house. His knuckles turned white on the steering wheel as he looked into the rearview mirror at his two children—the girl raised in the light, and the boy raised in the dark.
"We're going to Raven’s Gate," Marcus said, his voice cold and resolute. "We're going to finish what started nine years ago."
