Chapter 8 - Breaking the Iron Covenant

Sparks flew from the destroyed control panel as Marcus smashed the manual emergency override lever downward with all his remaining strength.
"Emergency protocol active," a synthetic voice chimed over the loudspeakers. "Structural containment compromised. Evacuate immediately."
The heavy bulletproof glass of Elena’s chamber began to slide upward with a loud pneumatic hiss.
"Elena!" Marcus cried out, sprinting to the edge of the platform.
He reached into the chamber, pulling his wife into his arms just as her oxygen mask fell away. Elena collapsed against his chest, weak and trembling, but her hands immediately flew up to wrap around Marcus’s neck, her tears soaking into his jacket.
"Marcus... oh God, Marcus..." she wept, her voice raspy from years of disuse. "You came back for me..."
"Always," Marcus sobbed, kissing her face, her eyes, her lips. "I’m never letting you go again."
Below the platform, Dr. Vance scrambled to his feet, his face covered in soot and blood. He pulled a compact pistol from his jacket, pointing it wildly at the family. "You won't ruin my life's work! None of you are leaving this mountain!"
"Look behind you, doctor," Leo’s calm voice echoed through the room.
Vance turned just in time to see the main coolant pipe above the server racks crack open under the pressure of the energy loop. A torrent of freezing liquid nitrogen erupted from the pipe, engulfing the master mainframe in a curtain of ice and fire.
The underground ceiling began to buckle as structural concrete blocks crashed down into the hallway.
"Run!" Marcus bellowed.
He lifted Elena into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest, while Maya and Leo ran side by side right in front of him, their hands linked, guiding the way through the falling debris and thick white smoke.
Dr. Vance screamed in rage as he tried to reach for his backup hard drives, but a massive stone beam collapsed from the ceiling, crashing directly onto the control platform, sealing the dark laboratory beneath tons of rubble forever.
Marcus, Elena, Maya, and Leo scrambled up the dark concrete stairs, bursting through the iron root-cellar door out into the cool, rain-washed air of the morning dawn.
The storm had finally passed.
Behind them, the ground above the subterranean facility sank inward with a deep, muffled thud, swallowing the remains of Raven’s Gate into the earth.
Marcus set Elena down gently on a bed of fresh green moss beside the old oak tree. The sun was just beginning to peek over the mountain crest, casting long, golden rays of light across the damp forest floor.

Elena looked up at her husband, then reached out her hands to her two children. Maya and Leo threw themselves into their mother's arms, crying tears of joy as Elena covered their faces with desperate, loving kisses.
"Look, Mommy," Maya whispered, pointing toward the sky where a brilliant, vibrant rainbow stretched across the mountain valley. "The rain stopped."
