Chapter 10 - The Garden of Reclaimed Colors

One year later.
The summer afternoon was warm, vibrant, and alive with the hum of honeybees and the soft rustle of apple leaves in the ocean breeze.
The garden behind the coastal house was in full bloom. Rows of bright red roses, yellow sunflowers, and purple lavender lined the stone pathways that wound around a small, crystal-clear stone pond Marcus had built with his own hands.
Sitting around a large wooden picnic table on the lawn were friends, neighbors, and the medical team who had aided in Elena’s complete recovery.
At the head of the table sat Marcus and Elena, sharing a plate of fresh peach cobbler. Elena was radiant, her laughter floating across the garden as she talked with a neighboring farm family.
Across the lawn, near the edge of the pond, Maya and Leo were running together through the grass.
Maya wore her favorite rainbow-colored dress—the same dress she had worn on the day she stopped beside the city fountain one year ago. And beside her ran Leo, wearing a matching rainbow-striped shirt, his face covered in bright freckles from the summer sun.
As they ran toward the pond, Leo suddenly stopped, looking down into the still, clear water.
"Maya, come look," Leo called out.
Maya ran to his side, leaning over the edge of the stone border to peer into the water beside her brother.
Reflected on the surface of the pond was not a haunting ghost from the past, nor a ragged boy trapped in the dark. Reflected in the water were two happy, healthy, identical children, standing shoulder-to-shoulder under the bright blue sky, their faces illuminated by the vibrant colors of their clothes and the pure, endless joy in their eyes.
Marcus walked up behind them, placing one hand on Leo’s shoulder and the other on Maya’s.
"What are you two looking at?" Marcus asked with a warm, gentle smile.
Leo looked up at his father, his hazel eyes clear and bright. "We're looking at our reflection, Daddy."
Maya wrapped her arms around Leo’s waist, looking up at Marcus with a bright grin. "It used to be a secret, didn't it?"
Marcus looked back toward the porch, where Elena was walking down the stone steps toward them, holding a framed photograph in her hands—a new photograph taken just weeks ago, showing all four of them standing together in the apple orchard, smiling under the sun.

"Secrets don't belong in the dark, sweetheart," Marcus said softly, wrapping his arms around both of his children as Elena joined them at the edge of the pond. "They belong right here... in the light."
The four of them stood together at the water's edge, their laughter blending with the warm summer breeze as the sun shone brightly above them, illuminating a family that would never be broken again.
