Chapter 5 - Beneath the Iron Foundation

The drive toward the northern mountains took four agonizing hours through the heavy rainstorm. The paved highways gradually gave way to narrow, winding dirt roads flanked by dense, suffocating walls of black pine trees.

By 4:00 AM, the station wagon came to a halt at the overgrown perimeter fence of the Raven’s Gate estate.

Beyond the rusty wrought-iron gates, the scorched ruins of the grand stone mansion rose like the ribcage of a long-dead leviathan against the stormy night sky. Nine years ago, Marcus had fled this place in absolute despair. Today, he walked toward it with a cold, unrelenting purpose.

"The gate is locked, Daddy," Maya whispered, peering through the rain-streaked windshield.

"It doesn't open from the outside," Leo said, his voice quiet but steady. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, strangely shaped piece of brass—a key with intricate, gears carved along its edge. "She gave me this before she pushed me through the drain. She said it opens the iron door beneath the root cellar."

Marcus took the key, feeling its heavy weight. "Stay close behind me, both of you."

Armed with a heavy flash-light and a tire iron from the trunk, Marcus led the children through a gap in the perimeter fence. They navigated the slick, muddy ground, stepping through the blackened ruins of the main hall where burnt timber and shattered stone lay covered in decades of wild ivy.

Leo led them unhesitatingly toward the rear of the ruins, stopping beside a massive fallen oak tree whose thick roots had cracked through the foundation stones. Hidden beneath the tangled mass of wood and earth was a heavy, reinforced steel door set directly into the bedrock.

Marcus inserted the brass key into the keyhole.

With a heavy, mechanical groan that vibrated through the mud beneath their feet, the lock clicked. The steel door swung open, revealing a dark, concrete staircase descending into the abyss below.

Cold air rushed upward—an air that smelled of ozone, chemical antiseptics, and stale water.

"Hold my hand, Maya," Leo whispered, his fingers interlacing with his sister's.

"I'm not scared if you're not," Maya replied softly, her rainbow dress glowing faintly under the yellow beam of Marcus's flashlight.

They descended the steps, leaving the storm behind. At the bottom of the staircase was a vast, subterranean corridor lined with reinforced glass observation rooms, electronic terminals, and rows of silver biological storage tanks.

This wasn't a ruin. It was a fully operational, hidden research laboratory operating beneath the corpse of his former home.

"Welcome home, Marcus," a smooth, cultured voice resonated through the corridor intercoms.

Marcus stopped, shielding the children behind him as the fluorescent lights along the ceiling flickered to life one by one, blinding them in a harsh, cold glow.

At the far end of the corridor, standing beside a massive glass chamber filled with life-support apparatus, was Dr. Arthur Vance. He was an elderly man with immaculate white hair, wearing a tailored gray suit and a gold pocket watch pinned to his lapel.

And inside the glass chamber, suspended in a circle of soft blue light, sat a woman with long silver-black hair, her breathing steady beneath an oxygen mask.

"Elena..." Marcus gasped, his knees almost giving out.
