Chapter 7 - The Choice at the Threshold

The silence that fell over the underground facility was more brutal than any physical blow.
Marcus pulled against the heavy grip of the guards, his muscles straining to the point of tearing, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at Vance. "Take me! Put me in the machine! Let them go!"
"Your biology is incompatible, Marcus," Vance chuckled dryly. "It requires the synchronized genetic wavelength of the twins. Choose now, or I will initiate the manual override and let Elena suffocate right before your eyes."
Vance reached out his thumb, hovering over the red button on his remote control. Inside the glass chamber, the blue life-support lights began to flicker amber. Elena’s chest rose and fell in rapid, frantic breaths as she beat her weak fists against the inside of the glass, shaking her head desperately at Marcus, mouthing the words: No! Save the children! Save them!
"Choose!" Vance demanded.
Leo looked at Maya. Then he looked at Marcus. The small, ragged boy who had spent nine years in the dark took a slow step forward, away from his sister.
"I'll stay," Leo said quietly.
"Leo, no!" Maya cried out, grabbing his arm, her eyes flooding with tears. "You just got out! We're supposed to be a family!"
"I've already lived in the dark, Maya," Leo whispered, smiling at her with a gentle, profound sadness that no seven-year-old should ever possess. "You have the rainbow dress. You belong in the sun. Tell Daddy to take you home."
"No!" Marcus screamed, tears streaming down his face as he thrashed against the guards holding him. "Nobody is staying! Leo, get back!"
"How touching," Vance sneered, gesturing for a guard to grab Leo. "The boy makes the choice for you."
As the guard reached out his heavy hand to seize Leo’s shoulder, Maya didn't run away. Instead, she stepped directly beside her brother. She grabbed Leo’s hand with both of her small hands, locking her fingers into his.
"We share everything," Maya declared, her young voice echoing through the chamber with breathtaking authority. "If he stays, I stay. If I go, he goes."
The moment their hands locked together in absolute, unwavering unity, something extraordinary happened.
The biological monitoring screens along the walls began to flash violently. The bio-resonance meters didn't split—they surged into a harmonious, overwhelming feedback loop. The frequency hummed through the concrete floor, shattering the fluorescent light tubes along the ceiling one by one.
"What is happening?!" Vance yelled, stumbling backward as his control remote began to spark and burn in his hand. "The baseline readings are spiking beyond capacity!"
"It's not a sacrifice, Vance!" Marcus shouted, seeing his chance.

Using the sudden distraction and total darkness caused by the shattered lights, Marcus drove his elbow back into the ribs of the guard holding him. The guard grunted and collapsed. Marcus spun around, swept the second guard's legs out from under him, and snatched a discarded security baton from the floor.
With a furious roar, Marcus charged at Dr. Vance, driving the heavy baton into the doctor's chest, sending Vance crashing into the master control console.
