Chapter 6 - The Positive Test & The Threat

Panic and wonder warred inside Harper’s chest. The 1-year contract was supposed to end with a clean break, a divorce, and $2 million in an offshore account. A baby changed the math entirely. If Carmine Falco or any of the rival families ever discovered she was carrying Dominic’s child, she and the baby would become prime targets for assassination.
Before she could process the shock, the penthouse intercom buzzed sharply.
Elias Montgomery’s voice came through the speaker, strained and urgent. “Mrs. Russo, you need to lock your doors. Carmine Falco has made a move. Downtown shipping warehouses have been attacked, and men are headed toward your location.”
Harper’s blood ran cold. She quickly hid the tests in her bedside drawer and grabbed her phone, but before she could dial Dominic, the heavy front door of the penthouse shuddered under a massive, violent impact.
Someone was breaking in.
Harper bolted toward the panic room built into Dominic’s private wing, but she was too late. The study doors blew open, and two armed men wearing Carmine’s insignia spilled into the hallway.
“Well, well,” a gravelly voice echoed as Carmine Falco’s right-hand man stepped into the light, grinning maliciously. “The little fake wife. Let’s see how much Dominic cares when we take you as insurance.”
Harper backed away, her hand instinctively flying to protect her flat stomach. “Stay away from me.”
Before the men could lunge, the hallway behind them exploded into violence. Dominic appeared out of nowhere like a dark avenging angel. He moved with lethal, terrifying speed, disarming the first intruder in seconds and slamming the second against the wall with enough force to shatter wood.
Within moments, both men were unconscious on the floor.

Dominic’s chest heaved as he spun toward Harper, his eyes wild with a terror she had never seen on him before. He grabbed her by the shoulders, shaking her slightly to ensure she was real.
“Are you hurt? Did they touch you?” he demanded, his voice cracking.
