Chapter 4 - The Girl’s Secret

While the adults played a dangerous game of cat and mouse, Lily was hidden away in the pediatric wing, guarded by two nurses Sarah trusted. The little girl sat on her bed, clutching her rabbit, staring at the ceiling.

"They think he's just a bad man," Lily murmured to herself.

One of the nurses, Clara, leaned in close. "Lily, honey, what did you mean when you said he puts the 'sleep-stuff' in the red? Did you see him do it at home?"

Lily nodded. "He takes Mommy’s medicine bottles and changes the labels. He keeps the real ones in the basement, in the room with the blue door. He told me if I ever told anyone, he’d turn Mommy into a star in the sky."

Clara’s blood ran cold. The basement was restricted. She looked at the security feed on her tablet. A man in a surgical mask—Mark—had been spotted near the HVAC control room. He wasn't trying to escape; he was trying to disable the hospital’s environmental systems. If he cut the power, the backup generators wouldn't activate immediately. In the ensuing darkness, the clinical data stored on the servers would be wiped, and the physical evidence in the morgue would be incinerated by an automatic emergency lockdown fire-suppression system.

Clara grabbed her radio. "Sarah, he’s not running. He’s sabotaging the hospital. We have to stop him from reaching the basement control center."

They didn't know that Mark was already there, his hand hovering over the master breaker, a sinister smile playing on his lips. The game was reaching its final, deadly act.
