Chapter 8 - The Midnight Pursuit

The mountain road was a ribbon of black asphalt winding through a forest thick with mist. Elena drove with white-knuckled intensity, her baby strapped securely in the backseat while Lily slept, exhausted by the trauma of the past twenty-four hours. Sarah sat in the passenger seat, monitoring the GPS and a stolen tablet that still pinged with encrypted location data from the Architect’s network.

"They're closing in," Sarah whispered, pointing to two sets of headlights rapidly gaining ground behind them.

The SUVs behind them weren't police; they were the professional cleanup crew. As they rounded a sharp hairpin turn, a gunshot shattered the rear windshield of Elena’s car. The glass exploded into a thousand glittering diamonds, showering the backseat. Elena didn't scream; she swerved, using the heavy SUV to sideswipe the trailing vehicle into the guardrail.

"Hold on!" Elena shouted.

She plunged the car into a narrow, unpaved logging trail, banking hard into the mud. The professional hunters were relentless, their high-beams cutting through the trees like searchlights. But Elena knew these woods; she had grown up hiking them. She turned off her headlights, driving by the faint, silver glow of the moon, navigating the treacherous terrain until the SUVs—too heavy and too fast—missed the turn and skidded into the brush below.

They were safe for the moment, but the final confrontation was inevitable.
