Chapter 6 - The Network of Deception

The hospital's speakers crackled to life, and the entire facility heard Mark’s voice booming through the halls. The confession was live.

"Aris was weak!" Mark yelled into the room, unaware of the broadcast. "He wanted to report the toxicity levels of the new trial. He didn't understand that the results were secondary. The goal was to see how long a human could survive with the additive before the nervous system collapsed!"

In the lobby, the administrators scrambled. The Chief of Security, who had been on the take, tried to cut the power, but it was too late. Reporters, who had been tipped off by an anonymous email from Dr. Sterling earlier that morning, were already flooding the emergency room entrance.

Mark realized his mistake when he heard his own voice echoing from the hallway speakers. His face contorted with rage. He turned, lunging at Sarah, but the door behind him swung open. It wasn't security; it was Elena.

Elena had checked herself out of the maternity ward, her strength returning with the singular, ferocious focus of a mother protecting her child. She held a heavy brass fire extinguisher—not to put out a fire, but as a weapon.

"You talked about me like I was already dead," Elena said, her voice shaking with adrenaline.

Mark hesitated. For the first time, he saw the woman he had tried to destroy not as a patient, but as a survivor. In that moment of distraction, Sarah tackled him, pinning his arms. The canister fell to the floor, rolling away harmlessly.
