Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Paperwork

The silence that followed the broker's scream was deafening. I imagined Arthur, slumped in his leather armchair, the glass of expensive scotch he’d likely poured to celebrate the "sale" now trembling in his hand. He wasn't just a thief; he was a coward who banked on the assumption that a soldier’s mind is occupied only by the mission, not by estate law.

I opened my encrypted files. Over the last year, I hadn't just been training for deployment; I had been tracking the paper trail of my father’s assets. Arthur had been bold, but boldness is the first symptom of arrogance. I discovered a series of shell accounts registered to a "consulting firm" Arthur had supposedly started. He was hemorrhaging money into bad investments, covering his tracks by siphoning off my inheritance.

I didn't just have the deed to the cabin; I had the receipts for the illegal transfers. I spent the night meticulously organizing the evidence. I wasn't just going to stop him from selling the cabin; I was going to ensure that every cent he had siphoned from the estate was accounted for.

I contacted an investigator—a former JAG officer I trusted—and gave him the digital breadcrumbs. "Don't move on him yet," I instructed. "Let him reach out to his legal team. Let him try to fix the ‘mistake.’ When he gets desperate and tries to move the last of the assets to cover the hole, that’s when we drop the hammer."

The game was no longer about the cabin. It was about total exposure.
