Chapter 3 - The Hawaii Illusion

Meanwhile, three thousand miles away, Emily was living in a bubble of blissful ignorance. She had always been the golden child, Arthur’s pride and joy, the one he showered with gifts he couldn't afford.

She landed in Maui with a designer suitcase and a mindset that everything in life was provided for. She posted photos on social media, taglines boasting about her "spontaneous tropical getaway." She had no idea the flight was paid for with phantom money—funds from a sale that didn't exist.

I monitored her feed from my terminal in the barracks. It was a strange sensation, watching the person who had once been my sister become a pawn in her own father’s destruction. I felt a flicker of pity, but I suppressed it. She had turned a blind eye to my father’s decline, choosing to embrace Arthur’s lavish, dishonest lifestyle.

Her phone rang incessantly. I knew Arthur was on the other end, trying to project strength while frantically calling every lawyer he knew to "resolve the issue with the deed." I watched the tone of her posts change over the next forty-eight hours. The glamorous selfies disappeared, replaced by cryptic captions about "family stress."

The bubble was bursting. The irony was that while she thought the world was falling apart because of some "clerical error" regarding a cabin, she was actually standing on the precipice of a total financial collapse that would strip her of everything.
