Chapter 8 - Legal Warfare

The following weeks felt like a whirlwind of depositions and sterile, fluorescent-lit rooms. The courtroom, however, was where the final mask was torn away. My attorney, a shark in a tailored suit, methodically dismantled Arthur’s life. He didn't just present the forgery of the cabin deed; he laid out a five-year timeline of systemic looting.

The "hidden deed" wasn't just a piece of paper; it was a sophisticated legal trust I had established the day I turned eighteen, sensing that my stepfather’s "investment strategy" was merely a slow-motion heist. When the prosecution produced the notarized confession from Marcus Vane, Arthur’s defense team crumbled. Vane, hoping for leniency, testified that Arthur had orchestrated every fraudulent wire transfer, coercing him into silence with threats of exposing his own illicit commissions.

The most painful part was watching Emily testify. She was a shell of her former self, stripped of her designer identity, forced to recount the gifts and trips she had accepted, all funded by my father’s estate. She wasn't a criminal, but she was a cautionary tale of blind entitlement. She looked at me once during the proceedings—not with malice, but with a horrifying, clear-eyed shame. I didn't return the glance. I was there for justice, not closure with them.
