Chapter 9 - The Fallout

The verdict was swift. Arthur was sentenced to prison for grand larceny, forgery, and embezzlement. The judge’s final words echoed through the silent courtroom, stripping him of the authority he had abused for so long. As the bailiffs led him away, he didn't look at me. He looked at the floor, a broken man who had traded his integrity and his family for the fleeting comfort of a lifestyle he never earned.

The aftermath was a logistical nightmare of asset recovery. The state seized his remaining bank accounts and his car to begin restitution. I regained control of the estate, but it was a pyrrhic victory. My father’s accounts were drained, and the "cabin" was once again mine, but the emotional tax had been high.

Emily reached out once after the trial. She had taken a job at a local grocery store, living in a cramped studio apartment. She sent a brief letter, not asking for money, but expressing a hollow, agonizing remorse. "I was a mirror for his greed," she wrote. "I didn't want to see what was behind the curtain because it was too easy to just enjoy the show." I didn't reply, but I made sure my lawyer informed her that I would not be pressing charges against her for her involvement, provided she never set foot on the property again. It was the only mercy I had left to give.
