Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Six months later, I turned the key to the cabin for the first time since my father’s funeral. The air inside smelled of pine, old books, and the ghost of woodsmoke—a scent that anchored me to the earth more than any barracks ever could.
The repairs were substantial. Arthur had neglected the roof and let the property taxes lapse, but the bones of the structure were solid. I spent my days working with my hands, replacing the warped floorboards and clearing the brush that had reclaimed the porch. It was manual labor, but it was honest. It was the antithesis of everything Arthur stood for.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the pines in shades of violet and gold, I sat on the porch with a coffee. The silence was no longer heavy; it was peaceful. I realized then that while Arthur had tried to steal my history to fund a shallow future, he had failed. He had only succeeded in forcing me to become the guardian of my own life.
I wasn't just holding onto a cabin; I was holding onto a principle. I had faced the worst of human nature and emerged on the other side with my moral compass intact. As the first star appeared above the canopy, I felt a sense of finality. The debts were paid, the lessons were learned, and for the first time in years, the future was entirely mine to build—brick by brick, and beam by beam. The legacy was safe.
