Chapter 3 - The Blood on the Sill

Within fifteen minutes, the Callahan estate was swarming with private tactical security, forensic investigators, and trusted federal agents. The perimeter was locked down tight, with armed guards patrolling every inch of the twelve-acre property in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Trevor stood in the master study down the hall, holding a sleeping Paige while Jonah rested peacefully in a temporary portable playpen beside his desk.
Dr. Marcus Vance, Trevor’s personal family physician, stepped out of the adjoining guest suite, wiping his hands with a damp cloth.
"How is she?" Trevor asked immediately.
"Severe physical exhaustion, mild concussion, dehydration, and multiple deep lacerations on her hands and forearms," Dr. Vance reported grimly. "She has defensive wounds consistent with stopping a blade. But she’s tough, Trevor. Unbelievably tough. I gave her an IV drip and a mild painkiller. She’s awake, but she needs rest."
"Did she say anything else?"
"Only that she insists on speaking with you alone," Vance said, stepping aside.
Trevor handed Paige to his head nanny, Mrs. Gable—who had just arrived back at the estate after being unexpectedly called away earlier that afternoon by a fake family emergency—and walked into the guest room.
Keisha was sitting up in the king-sized bed, an IV line taped to her hand, a crisp white bandage wrapped tightly around her forearm. She looked small against the massive mahogany headboard, but her posture remained remarkably composed.
Trevor pulled up a chair and sat beside the bed. The billionaire, accustomed to commanding boardrooms worth tens of billions, felt an uncharacteristic weight in his chest.
"The police interrogated the two men we secured in the nursery," Trevor began softly. "They are professional mercenaries. They had ghost passports, untraceable equipment, and a floor plan of my home that wasn't public record. The only way they could have had that layout is if someone inside my organization sold it to them."
Keisha nodded slowly, staring down at her bandaged hands. "It wasn't just a home invasion, Trevor. They were sent to kidnap the twins and hold them for ransom—or worse."
"How did you know?" Trevor pressed, leaning forward, his gaze piercing. "You've worked for me for five months as a maid. Your background check from the elite domestic agency came back completely clean: former hospitality worker, quiet, no criminal record. But maids don't disarm armed mercenaries with joint locks. Who are you really, Keisha?"
Keisha took a slow, painful breath. She reached toward the nightstand, where her torn uniform jacket lay folded. From the inner pocket, she pulled out a small, worn leather wallet and handed it to Trevor.
Trevor opened it.
Inside was an official identification card from the United States Department of Homeland Security, bearing her photo.

Trevor’s eyes widened. "You're a federal agent?"
"I was an agent," Keisha corrected gently, a flicker of pain crossing her face. "Until six months ago. Until the night your wife, Brianna, died in that car crash on the Interstate."

Trevor froze. The air left his lungs instantly. "What does Brianna have to do with any of this?"
"Brianna didn't die in a random highway accident, Trevor," Keisha revealed, her voice shaking with quiet emotion. "She was my elder sister."
