Chapter 4 - Shadows Inside the Estate

The silence that followed was so heavy it felt as though the room itself was collapsing under the weight of the revelation.
Trevor stared at Keisha, his mind frantically racing backwards through time, assembling pieces of a puzzle he hadn't even known existed.
Brianna had spoken of an estranged younger sister—a sister who had gone into deep undercover federal service years ago, changing her name and cutting ties with the family to protect them from the dangerous cartels she investigated. When Brianna died six months ago in what the state police ruled a tragic hydroplaning accident, Trevor had been too drowned in grief to look deeper into her past.
"Brianna..." Trevor whispered, his voice cracking. "You're her sister?"
"Her half-sister," Keisha clarified, tears glinting in her dark eyes. "We shared the same mother. When Brianna married you, she knew the life you lived was high-profile, but she thought she was safe. Three weeks before her death, she called me on a secure, encrypted line. She was terrified."
Trevor stood up, pacing the floor, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Terrified of what? She never said a word to me!"
"Because she was trying to protect you!" Keisha said passionately. "Brianna uncovered financial discrepancies inside Callahan Enterprises. She realized someone was using your charitable foundations and offshore logistics networks to launder hundreds of millions of dollars for a private military contractor called Aegis Global."
Trevor stopped dead in his tracks. Aegis Global was one of the largest security firm contractors in the world—and Trevor’s hedge fund was currently finalizing a three-billion-dollar buyout of their primary subsidiary.
"Brianna knew that if she told you directly, you would confront the board immediately and put yourself in their crosshairs," Keisha continued. "She was gathering digital evidence to give to the Department of Justice. But before she could finish, her car’s braking system was remotely hacked on the highway. They murdered her, Trevor."
Trevor covered his face with his hands, a deep, gut-wrenching pain tearing through his chest. For six months, he had blamed bad weather and wet roads for taking the love of his life.
"When the police ruled it an accident, I knew the agency had been compromised," Keisha said, her tone hardening into cold steel. "I resigned my commission, went off the grid, forged domestic credentials through a trusted contact, and took the job as your maid. I needed to protect Brianna’s children... and I needed to find out who inside your company ordered her death."
Trevor looked at Keisha with a mix of awe, guilt, and fierce respect. This woman had abandoned her career, her safety, and her entire life to mop his floors and scrub his counters, all while quietly standing guard over his children like a silent guardian angel.
"Did you find out who it was?" Trevor asked, his eyes burning with cold rage.
"I found out this morning," Keisha said. "I decrypted a partial data transmission sent from an IP address inside your executive penthouse. The person who authorized the takeover of Aegis Global—and the person who hired those mercenaries tonight—is your chief chief operating officer."

Trevor felt the blood drain from his face. "Harrison Vance."
Harrison Vance wasn't just his COO. He was Trevor’s closest friend for fifteen years—and the biological brother of Dr. Marcus Vance, who was currently standing right outside in the hallway.
