Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Truth

Three weeks passed.
The fallout from the Callahan-Aegis scandal dominated global news networks. Harrison Vance, Dr. Marcus Vance, and fourteen senior executives across three military contractors were formally indicted on federal charges, facing life sentences in maximum-security prison.
Callahan Enterprises stock rebounded to historic highs, praised by Wall Street for Trevor’s decisive action and immaculate corporate integrity.
In Greenwich, the quiet warmth had returned to the Callahan estate. The damaged nursery window was replaced with reinforced bulletproof glass, the security team was completely revamped with elite, vetted personnel, and the manicured lawns bloomed bright under the summer sun.
Trevor stood on the wide rear patio, holding a tray with two mugs of hot coffee.
Sitting on the patio steps, dressed in a comfortable cream sweater and jeans, was Keisha. She was watching Jonah and Paige play happily on a soft quilt spread across the grass, their giggles echoing through the peaceful air.
Trevor walked over and handed her a mug, sitting down beside her on the stone step.
"The FBI officially reinstated your senior agent commission this morning," Trevor said softly. "Director Miller called me personally to tell me they’re awarding you the Distinguished Service Medal."
Keisha took a sip of her coffee, smiling faintly at the horizon. "I turned it down."
Trevor turned to look at her, surprised. "You turned down the medal?"
"I turned down the reinstatement," she corrected gently, looking over at him with those deep, expressive brown eyes. "I spent seven years living behind fake identities, chasing monsters, and sleeping with a gun under my pillow. When I was in that nursery three weeks ago... holding Jonah and Paige while those men tried to break through... I realized something."
"What’s that?" Trevor asked, his heart beating a little faster.
"I realized that protecting this family wasn't just a mission to honor Brianna," Keisha whispered, tears shining in her eyes. "It was the first time in my entire life that I felt like I was where I truly belonged."
Trevor set his coffee mug down on the stone step. He reached out and gently took her hand in his. Her palm was soft, the scars from that terrifying night fading into thin silver lines.
"You don't ever have to leave, Keisha," Trevor said, his voice thick with raw, honest emotion. "The children love you. They look at you and see safety, joy, and warmth."
He paused, leaning closer, looking deeply into her eyes.
"And when I look at you," Trevor continued softly, "I see the bravest, most remarkable woman I have ever known. You saved my children. You saved my life. You gave me back a future I thought I lost six months ago."
Keisha felt a tear roll down her cheek, a soft, radiant smile breaking across her face. She squeezed his hand tightly.

"No more secrets?" she asked softly.
Trevor smiled warmly, leaning in to press a gentle, loving kiss against her forehead. "No more secrets. Only family."
