Chapter 2 - The Aftermath of Silence

The boardroom remained cold, but the atmosphere had shifted from clinical to volatile. Julian sat at the mahogany table, Rose cradled awkwardly but tenderly in his arms. He had not signed the divorce papers; they lay abandoned on the floor. Elena sat opposite him, her hands folded, watching the man she thought she knew dissolve into someone she didn’t recognize.

"Three years, Elena," Julian said, his eyes never leaving Rose’s sleeping face. "Three years of silence. I sent you money, I sent you solicitors, I had my team monitor your location—how did you hide a pregnancy? How did you hide this?" He gestured to the baby with a frantic, protective motion.

Elena felt the familiar burn of resentment. "You monitored my location, Julian? You didn't check on me. You checked on your investment. You wanted to make sure I wasn't making a scene that would hurt your stock prices. I didn't hide Rose. I built a fortress."

Julian finally looked up, his expression a mixture of fury and profound exhaustion. "A fortress? You destroyed me. Do you have any idea what it’s like to lose your wife and think she simply walked away without a fight?"

"I fought for our marriage for two years before I stopped," she replied, her voice cold. "Every time I tried to talk to you, you were on a plane to Tokyo, or you were closing a merger in London, or you were hosting a gala where I was just an accessory. I didn't leave you, Julian. You vacated the position of 'husband' long before I left the house."

Julian stood up, pacing the length of the room. He was a man who lived by logic, but his logic was failing. "Why are you here today? If you’ve survived this long without me, why break your silence now?"

Elena took a shaky breath. "Because I can’t protect her anymore. Your mother found out. She didn't want a grandchild; she wanted an heir to mold into a corporate puppet. She threatened to cut off my resources and drag me through the mud to get custody. I didn't come here for your money, Julian. I came here because you are the only person with enough power to stop her."

Julian’s face went pale. He knew his mother’s capacity for cruelty. He looked at Rose, then back at Elena, his jaw tightening. "You’ll stay at the estate. For the baby’s safety."

"I don't want to live with you," she protested.

"It’s not a request," he growled. "If my mother is coming for you, the only place you are safe is behind my walls. We are staying married. Not because I love you—I don't even know who you are anymore—but because I will not let my mother touch my daughter."
