Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

The boardroom was a pressure cooker. As Julian presented the audited findings, revealing the web of deceit woven by his own father and maintained by Evelyn, the air grew heavy with the scent of impending downfall. However, the true blow came from the least expected source.
Marcus, Julian’s right-hand man and the person he trusted with his most guarded secrets, stood up. He didn't defend the company; he signaled to the security detail at the door. "Julian, this is a beautiful performance. But while you were playing detective with your wife, you failed to notice that I am the one who holds the controlling shares in your shell companies."
The realization hit like a physical punch. Marcus had been the silent partner, the one who had actually facilitated the illegal movements to ensure that if Julian ever tried to break free, he would have no leverage left.
Evelyn smiled, a predator watching the trap snap shut. "You see, Julian? You are nothing without the architecture we built. Marcus, remove them."
In the chaos, the focus shifted to Rose. As security moved toward the dais, a bodyguard shoved Elena. Julian, moving with a speed his board members had never seen, lunged across the table. He didn't care about the company documents anymore; he only cared about the human shield he had become for his family. He took the impact, sending him crashing into the mahogany table, but he shielded Rose with his own body.

"Get her out of here!" Julian roared at Elena, blood staining his white shirt. "Take her and go!"
Elena didn't flee. She grabbed a heavy, antique letter opener from the desk and pressed it against the neck of the nearest board member—a man she knew was laundering the funds for Marcus. "Call them off, Marcus! Or I swear, I will expose every single wire transfer linked to your personal accounts to the federal authorities right now."
