Chapter 5 - Whispers of the Past

The aftermath of Evelyn’s ultimatum left the house in a state of suspended animation. With the board of directors now officially in a state of mutiny, Julian was forced to work from his home office, surrounded by encrypted files and the frantic calls of panicked investors. Elena, meanwhile, began to notice the strange inconsistencies in the household records.
While sorting through a collection of old files in the library—records that had been boxed up and left to gather dust since Julian’s father passed away—she found a private, leather-bound ledger. It wasn't a business document; it was a personal diary belonging to her late father-in-law.
As she turned the yellowed pages, her blood ran cold. The entries detailed a recurring pattern of "accidents" and "liquidations" that had paved the way for the Whitaker empire’s dominance. One entry in particular, dated three years prior, mentioned a plan to "neutralize the disruptive influence of the daughter-in-law," citing that Elena was becoming "too inquisitive" about the source of the company's sudden, suspicious growth.
Elena realized with a jolt of terror that her leaving three years ago hadn't been just a result of a loveless marriage—she had been systematically pushed, threatened, and followed. The reason Julian had been so distant was because his own father had been feeding him misinformation, painting Elena as a social climber who was cheating on him.
She waited until late that night, the house silent except for the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock, to show Julian the ledger.

He read the pages, his face turning an ashen grey. The man who had been his mentor, his hero, had been the architect of his misery. The betrayal was absolute. Julian didn't speak; he simply gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until his knuckles turned white.
"They didn't just break us apart," he whispered, his voice trembling with a lethal, controlled rage. "They stole three years of our lives."
