Chapter 6 - The Turning Point
The scandal hit the morning papers like a wrecking ball. "Whitaker Empire on the Brink of Collapse," the headlines screamed. A coordinated effort, clearly orchestrated by Evelyn, had leaked documents to the press suggesting that Julian was involved in the very corruption he had inherited from his father. It was a classic "poison pill" strategy—destroy the reputation of the company to force the CEO out.
Publicly, Julian was a pariah. Internally, his security team confirmed that someone had been compromising the company’s servers from within the mansion.
Elena saw the walls closing in. The board had set a deadline: step down by Friday, or face a public takeover. Julian was pacing his office, his eyes bloodshot, convinced there was no way to salvage his reputation without sacrificing the company.
"They have the signatures, Elena," he said, throwing his phone against the wall. "They have falsified documents that link my private accounts to the offshore shell companies. I’m finished."
"You’re finished if you try to fight them in their arena," Elena said, her voice steady. She stood up, shedding the persona of the quiet wife. She had a background in corporate law that she had kept hidden to avoid being "just another employee" in his eyes. "But you’re not alone. You have the access, I have the forensic audit trail, and we both know where your mother keeps the original, un-redacted ledgers."
Julian looked at her—really looked at her—and saw for the first time the brilliant, sharp-witted woman he had married. "You know how to read these?"

"I’ve been reading them for months," she replied. "We don't fight them in the press. We fight them in the courts. We initiate a preemptive audit. If we turn ourselves in for an 'internal investigation' before they can file the suit, the board loses the power to oust you. It becomes a procedural matter."
It was a gamble—the ultimate high-stakes play. They spent the next 48 hours in the office, fueled by coffee and raw adrenaline, tearing down the structure of the Whitaker legacy to build it back up, honest and clean.
