Chapter 3 - The Power Shift

Forty-eight hours later, the doors of the private maternity suite swung open.

I was dressed in a simple cashmere sweater and tailored black trousers, holding my son—whom I had officially named Leo Vance—wrapped in a soft blue blanket. Chloe walked beside me carrying my weekend bag.

Standing in the hospital lobby was a tall, distinguished man in his late fifties, wearing a bespoke pinstripe suit. Beside him stood six men and women in dark suits, carrying sleek leather briefcases.

"Mrs. Vance," the distinguished man stepped forward, bowing his head respectfully. "I am Vance Harrison. It is an honor to finally meet you in person."

"Thank you for coming so quickly, Mr. Harrison," I said softly.

"Your late grandfather, Mr. Edward Vance, spoke of you often in his final months," Mr. Harrison said gently. "He deeply regretted the distance between you two, but he was determined to ensure that his life's work—Vance International Enterprises—was placed in the hands of someone with a pure heart. As of midnight yesterday, all trusts have officially vested in your name."

He gestured to the six individuals standing behind him. "This is your executive legal and asset-management team, led by Ms. Sarah Jenkins, former federal prosecutor and top family defense attorney in the southwest."

Ms. Jenkins, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair, stepped forward and shook my hand firmly. "Mrs. Vance. We have already reviewed the divorce agreement your husband attempted to coerce you into signing. It is not only legally laughable, but it also constitutes actionable coercion and emotional distress."

"Tyler thinks I am penniless," I said as we walked toward a fleet of three black luxury SUVs waiting at the hospital curb. "He believes he can evict me from our leased apartment tomorrow and leave me on the street."

Ms. Jenkins offered a cold, satisfied smile. "Mr. Harrison's office looked into the lease of your apartment building in downtown Phoenix this morning. The building was owned by a subsidiary of Apex Commercial Properties."

"Was?" I asked, looking at Mr. Harrison.

Mr. Harrison opened the door of the center SUV for me. "Apex Commercial Properties was struggling with debt. At 8:00 AM today, Vance International acquired the parent company for forty-five million dollars in cash. You are now the sole owner of the entire high-rise complex, Mrs. Vance. Including your husband's leased unit."

A slow, powerful warmth spread through my chest. "And his job at Sterling Global Investments?"

"Sterling Global is currently seeking a sixty-million-dollar capital injection to complete their flagship luxury development project in Scottsdale," Mr. Harrison explained as we settled into the plush leather interior of the SUV. "The chairman, Richard Sterling—Victoria's father—has pledged forty percent of the firm's equity as collateral to secure that funding."

"Who is funding them?" I asked.

"Previously, a private equity consortium out of New York," Mr. Harrison replied. "However, Vance International bought out their loan position two hours ago. You are now Sterling Global’s primary creditor. If they fail to meet their quarterly benchmarks, you have the unilateral right to seize control of the entire company."

I looked out the tinted window as the city of Phoenix blurred past. Three days ago, I was crying on a cold kitchen floor, wondering how I was going to afford diapers. Today, I held the leash to the very empire my husband was trying to climb.

"Where are we going?" Chloe asked from the seat beside me, her eyes wide with awe.

"To your new home, Mrs. Vance," Mr. Harrison said, handing me a heavy brass key ring. "Your grandfather's estate in Paradise Valley has been fully prepared by the staff. Twelve acres, full security, private medical staff on standby, and complete privacy."

As the SUV smoothly navigated up the winding roads of Paradise Valley, a massive gated estate appeared against the backdrop of the red rocks. The wrought-iron gates swung open automatically, revealing a breathtaking Mediterranean manor surrounded by manicured gardens and fountains.

When we stepped into the grand foyer, six house staff members bowed politely.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Vance," the head butler said warmly.

I held baby Leo close to my chest, breathing in his sweet scent. "Thank you."

I turned to Ms. Jenkins. "When is Tyler planning to carry out the eviction?"

"Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock," Ms. Jenkins replied. "He hired a private moving crew to dump your belongings on the sidewalk."

I looked down at my hands—hands that had worked endlessly to support a man who tossed me aside like trash.

"Make sure the moving crew arrives," I said coldly. "I want to be there to hand him his notice personally."
