Chapter 5 - The Gala of Reckoning

Two weeks passed.
The news of my inheritance had been kept strictly within private financial circles, but the ripples were already tearing through the Phoenix business elite.
Tyler was unraveling. The temporary restraining order prevented him from contacting me, and his desperate attempts to secure a top-tier lawyer failed miserably—no law firm in Arizona wanted to face the formidable legal army of Harrison, Sterling & Croft.
Even worse for Tyler, Victoria's father, Richard Sterling, was hosting the annual Arizona Builders and Investors Gala at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. It was the biggest financial networking event of the year, where Sterling Global was set to announce their flagship Scottsdale project and secure their final funding.
Tyler, desperate to salvage his relationship with Victoria and keep his job, spent his last remaining savings renting a high-end tuxedo and buying a diamond necklace for Victoria to beg for her forgiveness.
Inside the grand ballroom of the Biltmore, crystal chandeliers cast brilliant light over hundreds of executives, politicians, and socialites dressed in black-tie attire.
Tyler stood near the champagne fountain, holding two glasses, nervously scanning the room for Richard Sterling. Victoria stood nearby with her mother, whispering furiously and casting furious glances in Tyler's direction.
"Mr. Sterling!" Tyler called out, hurrying toward a tall, white-haired man surrounded by several corporate board members. "Sir! Thank you so much for inviting me tonight!"
Richard Sterling turned, looking at Tyler with a cold, dismissive eye. "Tyler. I heard about the scene at the Grand Pointe apartments. Victoria told me everything."
Tyler swallowed hard, sweating beneath his heavy collar. "Sir, it was a complete misunderstanding! My ex-wife is unstable! She lied about her background, and—"
"I don't care about your messy personal life, Tyler," Richard interrupted sharply. "What I care about is the funding for the Scottsdale project. The New York consortium pulled out their sixty million dollars this afternoon."
Tyler gasped. "What?! Why?!"
"They sold our loan position to an anonymous private trust," Richard said, his forehead lined with deep anxiety. "The new lead investor is attending tonight's gala. If she doesn't agree to extend our credit line by midnight, Sterling Global is bankrupt. So wipe that sweat off your face and help me find her."
Just then, the grand double doors of the ballroom swung open.
The master of ceremonies stepped up to the microphone, his voice booming through the silent hall.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Chairwoman of Vance International Enterprises... Mrs. Nora Vance."
The entire room turned toward the entrance.
A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom.
I stepped onto the polished marble floor wearing a custom emerald-green silk gown that cascaded gracefully to the floor. A breathtaking necklace of flawless white diamonds sparkled against my collarbone. My hair was styled in a classic, sweeping updo, and my presence radiated calm, unyielding power.
Flanking me were Mr. Vance Harrison, Ms. Sarah Jenkins, and four executive directors of Vance International.
Tyler dropped his champagne glasses.
CRASH!
The crystal shattered on the floor, green champagne splashing over his polished shoes, but Tyler didn't even notice. He stood frozen, his eyes bulging out of his head, his jaw hanging open in total horror.
"N-Nora?" Tyler choked out, his voice barely audible over the murmur of the crowd.
Richard Sterling's eyes lit up with intense relief. "That's her! That's the Chairwoman!"
Without waiting for Tyler, Richard Sterling pushed his way through the crowd, hurrying over to me with a wide, welcoming smile, extending his hand.
"Mrs. Vance!" Richard beamed. "What an absolute honor to meet you! I am Richard Sterling, Chairman of Sterling Global!"
I stopped, looking down at his offered hand, then up into his hopeful face. I didn't shake it.
"Mr. Sterling," I said coolly, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet circle of onlookers that had formed around us.
Richard lowered his hand slightly, unfazed. "Mrs. Vance, I understand your firm recently acquired our sixty-million-dollar development loan. We are incredibly eager to partner with Vance International to finalize the Scottsdale project!"
"Partner?" I raised a delicate eyebrow. "I didn't buy your debt to partner with you, Mr. Sterling. I bought it to conduct a thorough audit of your firm's ethical and financial management."
Richard blinked, startled. "Ethical management? Mrs. Vance, I assure you, Sterling Global operates under the highest standards of integrity!"
May you like
"Does it?" I turned my head slowly, my eyes locking onto Tyler, who was cowering behind a marble pillar ten feet away, trembling violently. "Because one of your Senior Managing Directors seems to lack even the most basic human decency."
Every eye in the room followed my gaze, landing directly on Tyler.
