Chapter 8 - Justice in the Courtroom

The Maricopa County Family Courthouse was swarming with reporters and camera crews when my convoy of black SUVs pulled up to the entrance.

Tyler was already standing on the courthouse steps, wearing a cheap, ill-fitting suit he had bought from a thrift store, flanked by his flashy lawyer, Frank Mercer. Tyler was wiping away fake tears for the news cameras, holding a microphone.

"I just want to be a father to my son!" Tyler wailed into the cameras. "My ex-wife used her sudden wealth to steal my boy away from me! She thinks money buys everything, but it can't buy a father's love!"

Flashbulbs popped frantically as I stepped out of the SUV, surrounded by my legal team and security detail. I ignored the shouting reporters, walking up the steps with my head held high, my face impassive and majestic.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the air was heavy with tension.

Judge Marcus Cole, a stern man in his sixties with piercing gray eyes, sat on the bench reviewing the filings.

"We are here in the matter of Vance v. Vance," Judge Cole announced, rapping his gavel once. "Mr. Mercer, you have filed an emergency motion for full physical custody and temporary spousal/child support on behalf of Mr. Tyler Vance. Present your argument."

Frank Mercer stood up puffed up like a peacock. "Your Honor! My client is a devastated father. When Mrs. Vance suddenly inherited two hundred million dollars, she transformed into an elitist corporate executive who works eighty hours a week. She leaves little Leo with hired staff. My client, despite facing recent financial hardship, is dedicated solely to raising his son in a normal, loving environment!"

Judge Cole stroked his chin, looking over at my defense table. "Ms. Jenkins. How does your client respond?"

Ms. Jenkins stood up calmly. She didn't look flustered in the slightest.

"Your Honor," Ms. Jenkins said smoothly. "Before we discuss 'parental dedication,' we would like to submit Exhibit A into evidence."

Ms. Jenkins tapped her laptop. The courtroom monitors illuminated with a official certified medical report from Phoenix General Hospital.

"This is the admission record for Mrs. Nora Vance on the night of her labor," Ms. Jenkins stated clearly. "You will note that Mrs. Vance arrived at the emergency room alone, driving herself while experiencing peak contractions, after her husband threw her out of their residence."

Tyler flinched violently at the defense table.

"Exhibit B," Ms. Jenkins continued, switching the screen to a high-definition security camera video from the hospital hallway.

The video clearly showed Tyler walking into the maternity ward four hours after birth, hand-in-hand with Victoria Sterling, laughing and holding the coercion papers.

The audio played loudly through the courtroom speakers:

“I’m done with you. Take the five thousand dollars or I'll drag you through court until you're bankrupt! You don't have a job, Nora. You'll lose custody before he turns one!”

Judge Cole’s gray eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he watched the video. He looked directly at Tyler, whose face was completely pale, cold sweat dripping from his forehead.

"Mr. Mercer," Judge Cole's voice dropped into a terrifyingly quiet register. "Is this the 'devastated father' you are referring to?"

Mercer stammered, frantically shuffling through his papers. "Y-Your Honor... my client was under immense emotional strain at the time—"

"I am not finished, Your Honor," Ms. Jenkins interrupted smoothly. "Exhibit C."

A bank statement appeared on the screen.

"This is Mr. Vance’s personal credit card record from the week following the birth of his son," Ms. Jenkins said. "While Mrs. Vance was paying for infant formula and medical checks, Mr. Vance spent fourteen thousand dollars of stolen corporate funds on luxury dining, designer clothing, and a deposit on a penthouse with his mistress."

"Lie! It's all a lie!" Tyler suddenly burst out, slamming his hands onto the table. "She set me up! She had millions of dollars and didn't tell me! She trapped me!"

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Judge Cole slammed his gavel down with thunderous force. "Silence in my courtroom, Mr. Vance!"

Judge Cole took off his glasses, rubbing the bridge of his nose, breathing heavily with righteous indignation.

"In my twenty years on the bench," Judge Cole said, his voice echoing off the wood paneling, "I have rarely witnessed such a sickening display of greed, neglect, and outright malice."

He pointed a sharp finger at Tyler.

"Mr. Vance, you abandoned your wife while she was in medical distress. You mocked your newborn child. You attempted to extort money from a woman you humiliated, and then you had the audacity to enter my courtroom pretending to be a loving father!"

"Your Honor—" Mercer tried to interject.

"Sit down, Mr. Mercer!" Judge Cole roared. "Or I will hold you in contempt of court!"

Judge Cole signed the paper before him with a sharp, heavy stroke of his pen.

"The petition for custody is DENIED with prejudice," Judge Cole ruled firmly. "Full legal and physical custody of Leo Vance is awarded exclusively to Mrs. Nora Vance. Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent, lifetime restraining order prohibiting Mr. Tyler Vance from coming within one thousand yards of the child or the mother."

Judge Cole looked at the court bailiff. "Bailiff, inform the District Attorney's office that this court recommends immediate remand of Mr. Vance into custody pending his criminal trial for grand larceny and perjury."

Two bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing Tyler by his arms and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Nora! NORA!" Tyler screamed, thrashing wildly as he was dragged away toward the holding cells. "Please! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't do this to me!"

I sat at my table, watching him go, feeling no anger, no pain, and no sorrow.

Only peace.
