Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Arrogant

The ballroom fell into a deadly silence. Hundreds of Phoenix's most powerful elites stared at Tyler, who looked like a man standing before a firing squad.
Richard Sterling turned, glaring at Tyler with rising fury. "Tyler? What is she talking about?"
I stepped forward, the silk of my dress rustling softly against the floor. "Two weeks ago, Mr. Sterling, your newly appointed Senior Managing Director abandoned his heavily pregnant wife on the floor of their apartment while she was in full labor."
Gasping echoes rippled through the crowd. Several high-society women covered their mouths in horror.
"Not only did he leave her alone," I continued, my voice steady, clear, and damning, "he walked into her hospital room three hours after she gave birth, accompanied by your daughter, Victoria, and attempted to coerce her into signing away all parental rights and support for a five-thousand-dollar payoff."
"My God..." an elderly board member gasped. "Is that true?"
"No! It's a lie!" Tyler suddenly shrieked, panic driving him out from behind the pillar. He rushed toward us, his arms waving wildly. "She's lying! She's trying to ruin me because I divorced her! Mr. Sterling, don't listen to her! She's crazy!"
Ms. Jenkins stepped forward, pulling a thin tablet from her portfolio and tapping the screen.
Instantly, the massive projection screens at the front of the ballroom—meant for Sterling Global's project presentation—flickered to life.
A crystal-clear audio recording played through the ballroom speakers:
“I spent three years wasting my youth and my hard-earned money supporting a woman with no career... Do you honestly think I’m going to drag a penniless, unemployed housewife into my new life? Take the five thousand dollars or I'll drag you through court until you're bankrupt!”
Tyler's own voice echoed off the high ceilings, cold, cruel, and unmistakable.
Victoria screamed, hiding her face in her hands as her mother pulled her away in utter shame.
Richard Sterling's face turned from pale white to deep crimson. He looked at Tyler with pure, venomous rage.
"You pathetic, sociopathic monster," Richard snarled through gritted teeth.
"Mr. Sterling, please!" Tyler dropped to his knees on the ballroom floor, crying openly, reaching for Richard's pants leg. "I did it for the company! I wanted to be worthy of Victoria! Please, don't fire me!"
"Fire you?!" Richard shouted, kicking Tyler's hand away. "You are stripped of your title immediately! Security! Drag this piece of trash out of my sight!"
Four heavy Biltmore security guards descended on Tyler, lifting him off his knees by his arms.
"Wait!" I said calmly.
The guards paused. Tyler looked up at me, tears streaming down his face, a glimmer of pathetic hope flashing in his eyes.
"Nora... Nora, please..." Tyler whimpered. "You won... you showed everyone... please forgive me! Think of Leo! We can be a family again! I'll do whatever you want! I'll be your house-husband! Just please don't destroy me!"
I walked over to him, stopping right in front of his kneeling form. I leaned down, looking into his bloodshot, terrified eyes.
"You told me that night that I was useless taking up space," I whispered softly. "You told me you were done with me."
"I was stupid! I was blind!" Tyler sobbed.
"No, Tyler," I said, my voice as cold as ice. "You were cruel. And cruelty always collects its debt."
I looked up at Richard Sterling. "Mr. Sterling. As the primary creditor of Sterling Global, I am issuing a formal audit notice. Furthermore, if Tyler Vance is not formally prosecuted for corporate embezzlement regarding the unauthorized use of company accounts for his personal luxury car lease, Vance International will foreclose on your sixty-million-dollar loan by midnight."
Richard didn't hesitate for a single second. "He will be arrested before the night is over, Mrs. Vance! I will personally press charges!"
"No! Nora! NOOOOO!" Tyler screamed as the security guards dragged him backward across the marble floor, his shoes squealing against the stone, his cries echoing down the long hallway until the heavy doors slammed shut behind him.

I adjusted my diamond necklace, turned back to the room of stunned executives, and raised my glass of sparkling water.
"Now, Mr. Sterling," I said with a faint, beautiful smile. "Let's discuss the future of your company."
