Chapter 2 - The House of Vane

The drive to the Vane estate was a journey into a world Julian had only ever glimpsed in the fringes of high-stakes financial journals. As the SUVs purred through the reinforced iron gates, the estate revealed itself—a sprawling, fortress-like manor carved from limestone and glass, perched on a cliff overlooking the churning Atlantic.

Inside, the house was a sanctuary of cold elegance. Clara, still shivering from the shock of the night, was ushered into a study where a fire crackled with a ferocity that matched her own internal state.

"You should have told us," Dominic said, pouring a glass of amber liquid and handing it to her. His voice wasn't an accusation; it was a lament. "We were looking for you for years, Clara. Ever since you walked away to find a 'normal' life with that… parasite."

Clara looked at her hands. Her wedding ring, a diamond she had once thought was a symbol of love, now looked like a shackle. She slid it off and dropped it into the fireplace. "I wanted to prove I was more than a surname. I wanted to be loved for me, not for the Vane fortune."

"And look where that brought you," Silas said, leaning against the mahogany desk, his eyes dark. "With a target on your back and a child to protect. The 'normal' life is a luxury for those who don't have our blood, Clara. But that’s over."

"I don't want to hide anymore," Clara said, her voice steadying. "I want him to lose everything. I want him to know what it’s like to be as hollow as he made me feel."

Leo, her brother and the youngest of the trio, walked over to her. He was the strategist of the family, the one who broke companies without ever firing a shot. "He’s been embezzling from the accounts you thought were shared, Clara. He’s already leveraged your personal trust to cover his losses at the firm. He isn't just a heartless husband; he’s a criminal."

Clara looked at her son, asleep in the cradle they had already set up for him in the nursery. "Take it all," she said. "But do it slowly. I want him to watch it happen."
