Chapter 5 - The Gala of Lies

The annual Winter Charity Gala was the heartbeat of the city’s elite, and for Julian, it was his last stand. He was desperate, hunting for any investor naive enough to ignore the rumors of his collapse. He didn't know that the guest list had been curated—and heavily pruned—by the Vane family.
Clara arrived at the ballroom like a storm dressed in silk. She wore a gown of midnight blue, adorned with sapphires that caught the light like cold, distant stars. On her arm was Leo, her brother, playing the role of her business associate.
Across the room, Julian spotted them. His face paled, then flushed with a mixture of terror and rage. He cornered Clara near the balcony, far from the prying eyes of the press.
"What are you doing here?" he hissed, grabbing her arm.
Clara didn't flinch. She simply pulled back, her movement so fluid and sharp that he let go instinctively. "I’m here to witness the finale, Julian. You’re being watched by everyone tonight. Do you see them?" She gestured toward the balcony, where several influential board members were watching Julian with cold, assessing gazes. "They know you’re broke. They know you embezzled from your own accounts to fund Elena’s lifestyle. It’s over."
Just then, Elena approached, draped in borrowed jewels that weren't even hers to keep. She opened her mouth to sneer, but stopped cold when she saw Clara. The power dynamic had shifted so violently that the air in the room seemed to vibrate.

"He's nothing, Elena," Clara said, turning her back on Julian to address the mistress directly. "You’ve hitched your wagon to a sinking ship. How much longer until you try to jump?"
The crowd began to murmur. Julian’s reputation, already fragile, was being shattered by the mere presence of his former wife—now an elegant, untouchable enigma.
