Chapter 9 - The Ashes of the Past

Months had passed since the verdict. The Blackwood estate had been liquidated, and the proceeds were donated to charities supporting women and children in crisis.

One afternoon, a letter arrived for Clara. It was from the prison. It was a letter from Julian, penned in shaky, frantic handwriting. It was filled with apologies, excuses, and pleas for a singular visit. He claimed he had found "perspective" behind bars and wanted to beg for forgiveness, to explain the "pressures" he was under.

Clara held the letter over the flame of a candle in her fireplace, watching the edges curl and blacken. She thought back to the freezing night in the snow, the feeling of the ice biting her skin, and the terror of not knowing if she and her son would survive until morning.

She realized she didn't need his apology. His regret wasn't for his actions; it was for his loss of status. She took her pen and wrote a brief note on a single sheet of paper: “The person you are asking to forgive you died that night. Do not write again.”

She sent the letter without a return address. She didn't feel vengeful; she felt liberated. She spent the rest of the day in the garden with her son, watching him chase butterflies, realizing that the weight of the past had finally been lifted from her shoulders.
