Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The mask had finally fallen, and Julian was cornered. He had lost his company, his social standing, and now, he knew the Vanes had enough evidence to put him in prison for a decade.

Driven by a manic, desperate rage, he did the only thing a man with nothing left could do: he became dangerous. He managed to track down where Clara was staying—a private, high-security residence—and decided he would force a resolution. He couldn't win the war, so he would try to win the moment.

He arrived at the estate at midnight, bypassing the perimeter security with a forged key card he had kept from his past life. He found Clara in the library, alone, writing in a journal.

"I have nothing left, Clara!" he roared, lunging toward her, his eyes wild. "You destroyed it all! You and your brothers!"

He grabbed her, but he hadn't accounted for the fact that Clara had spent the last several weeks training with her family’s security detail. She didn't scream. She didn't beg. She simply stepped aside, tripped him with a practiced motion, and pinned him to the floor with a strength born of pure, distilled rage.

Before he could recover, the doors to the library burst open. Dominic and Leo stood there, their expressions cold enough to stop a heart.

"Get off him, Clara," Dominic said, his voice low. "He’s not worth the dirt on your shoes."

Julian looked up, realizing the futility of his actions. He was a small man in a world of giants, and he had spent his life stepping on the wrong people. As the security team moved in to restrain him, Clara walked over to him, leaning down until their faces were inches apart.

"You told me to disappear," she whispered, her voice a calm reflection of the night he had shoved her into the snow. "You gave me five minutes. I’ve given you months. Now, the time is up."
