Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master

Clara decided it was time to step out of the shadows. She couldn't just watch from afar; she needed to see the look in his eyes when he realized the architect of his destruction was the woman he had discarded.

She hired a top-tier image consultant and underwent a transformation. The soft, modest Clara was gone. In her place was a woman of ice and steel, dressed in tailored silks, her hair pinned back with severe elegance. She adopted the identity of 'Claire Vance,' a venture capitalist looking for 'distressed assets'—the perfect cover.

She arranged a meeting with Julian at an upscale restaurant, a place he used to frequent when he wanted to impress. When he walked in, he looked disheveled, his suit hanging loosely on his frame.

Clara sat at the center table, a glass of water in front of her. When Julian sat down, he didn't even recognize her at first.

"Mr. Blackwood," she said, her voice cool and professional. "I’ve heard your firm is in… significant trouble. I’m interested in your remaining holdings, provided the price is right."

Julian leaned in, his eyes hungry, desperate for a lifeline. "I can offer you total control, Ms. Vance. I just need a bridge loan to stabilize the operations. This is a goldmine, I promise you."

Clara looked at him, feeling absolutely nothing. The man who had once terrified her now looked like a pathetic child begging for scraps.

"I don't want a goldmine, Julian," she said, leaning forward until they were inches apart. "I want the satisfaction of watching you sign the papers that hand over everything to me. Every share, every property, every single thing that bears your name."

Julian froze. The cadence of her voice, the way she tilted her head—he felt a jolt of recognition. His blood turned to ice. "Clara?"

She smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Clara is dead, Julian. You killed her that night in the snow. Today, you’re just meeting the woman who is going to make sure you never recover."
