Chapter 3 - The Slow Decay

The dismantling of Julian’s life began the following Monday. It started with a whisper in the boardroom.

Julian arrived at his firm expecting a routine morning, only to find the atmosphere heavy with dread. By ten o'clock, his lead investor had pulled out, citing "sudden concerns regarding the firm's liquidity." By noon, the auditors arrived, sent by a regulatory board that, unbeknownst to Julian, was chaired by an old business associate of the Vane family.

At home, the tension was becoming a rot. Elena, who had thrived on the luxury of the Blackwood estate, was growing increasingly erratic. She hadn't expected the downfall to be so rapid.

"Julian, why is the credit card declined?" she demanded, throwing a stack of mail onto the dining table. "And why are there cars parked at the end of the driveway every single night? It’s unnerving."

Julian paced the floor, his phone vibrating incessantly with calls from creditors he had ignored for weeks. "It’s just a rough patch, Elena! The market is volatile. Just give me some time!"

"Time is something we don't have," Elena hissed, her eyes narrowing. She had never loved Julian; she loved the status he provided. As she watched him crumble, she began to make her own calls, searching for a way to secure her own parachute, unaware that every move she made was being monitored by the Vane security detail.

Clara watched it all from a secure tablet in her brother’s study. Every time Julian reached out for help, a door slammed shut. He was being systematically isolated, stripped of the influence he had used so arrogantly to belittle her.
