Chapter 2 - The Five-Year-Old’s Words & The DNA Trap

The afternoon breeze suddenly felt like ice. Over seventy guests—prominent socialites, Andrea’s business partners, family members, and catering staff—stood motionless around the manicured lawn.
Valerie remained on one knee, her red silk dress spread out over the grass, her arms frozen open in an awkward gesture of staged maternal affection. Marco stood beside her, holding the microphone, his chest puffed out in what he believed was a triumphant moment.
Little Leo did not step into Valerie’s arms. Instead, he pulled back closer to Andrea, clutching his mother’s linen trousers with his left hand while pointing his right forefinger straight at Valerie’s face.
His young, piercing voice echoed across the quiet garden:
“You’re NOT my mommy! You’re the mean lady who snuck into my bedroom last week with scissors and tried to cut my hair while Daddy held me down! Daddy told you that you needed my hair for a fake test so you could take Mommy’s money!”
A sharp, collective gasp rippled through the audience.
Marco’s face drained of color so fast it appeared as though every drop of blood had been drained from his head. His grip on the microphone slipped, creating a harsh screech of feedback that cut through the silence.
Valerie’s theatrical smile instantly disintegrated. Her eyes widened in sheer panic, darting from the child to Marco, and then to the shocked faces of the crowd.
“What… what did he just say?” Andrea’s mother whispered, stepping forward with her hand over her mouth.
Andrea felt a wave of cold fury crash through her veins. She lowered herself onto one knee beside her son, her hands firmly resting on Leo’s small shoulders.
“Leo, sweetheart,” Andrea said, her voice impossibly steady despite the roar of adrenaline in her ears. “Look at Mommy. Is that what happened when I was in New York for the jewelry expo last Tuesday?”
Leo nodded vigorously, his eyes filling with big, brave tears. “Yes, Mommy! Daddy told me it was a secret game. He said if I screamed, he would throw away all my toys. The lady cut my hair and put it in a tiny plastic bag!”
Andrea slowly stood up. The soft, elegant hostess who had been welcoming guests an hour ago was gone. In her place stood a woman whose billion-dollar jewelry empire had been built on fierce determination and unyielding resolve.
She turned her gaze toward Marco and Valerie.
“A hair sample,” Andrea said, her voice carrying across the entire garden without the need for a microphone. “You needed Leo’s DNA so you could send it to a compromised lab or forge a maternity match, didn’t you?”
“He’s… he’s lying! She coached him!” Valerie shrieked, scrambling to her feet. Her voice was no longer sweet or polished; it was shrill and desperate. “Marco, tell them! The boy is confused! You told me she brainwashed him!”
Marco stammered, taking a step backward. “Andrea… listen to me… the boy is five years old! He’s imagining things! Kids have wild imaginations!”

“Does he, Marco?” a sharp, authoritative voice called out from the third row of seating.
Dr. Evelyn Vance, one of Chicago’s most distinguished chiefs of obstetrics and gynecology, stood up from her table. She smoothed her blazer and walked deliberately toward the front of the garden.
