Chapter 7 - The Trial & The Final Reckoning
Four months later, the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed with reporters, media cameras, and prominent figures from Chicago society. The trial of Marco Vance and Valerie Cross had become the most publicized corporate and criminal scandal of the year.
Andrea arrived at the courthouse wearing a tailored cream-colored suit, her posture commanding and immaculate. Beside her walked Julian Sterling, carrying the legal briefs that would finalize the destruction of Marco and Valerie’s defense.
Inside the courtroom, Marco sat at the defense table looking broken, gaunt, and dressed in a orange prison jumpsuit. His former polished appearance was gone; his hair was unkempt, and his eyes were sunken with panic. Beside him sat Valerie, wearing a similar prison uniform, her face stripped of makeup and her previous smug confidence completely shattered.
The trial did not last long.
The prosecution presented an airtight case: the audio recordings from the mansion, the forensic bank trails showing the stolen two point four million dollars, the testimony of Dr. Vance, and the physical evidence of the lock of Leo’s hair seized from Valerie’s purse.
When Valerie took the stand in a desperate attempt to save herself, she turned completely on Marco.
“It was all Marco!” Valerie sobbed into her hands, pointing a shaking finger at her co-defendant. “He told me his wife was worth eighty million dollars! He said if we staged the maternity scandal, the public backlash would force her to step down as CEO, and he would inherit controlling interest through the child’s trust! He promised me a million dollars to go along with it!”
“You lying snake!” Marco screamed, slamming his hands on the defense table as his attorney tried frantically to hold him down. “You were the one who bought the fake paper templates online! You were the one who snuck into my son’s room with the scissors!”
“Order in the court!” the judge barked, slamming his gavel repeatedly.
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When the verdict was read, the courtroom was dead silent:
Valerie Cross: Guilty of Grand Larceny, Corporate Espionage, Attempted Extortion, and Child Endangerment. Sentenced to 12 years in state penitentiary.
Marco Vance: Guilty of Wire Fraud, Embezzlement, Criminal Conspiracy, and Child Endangerment. Sentenced to 18 years in federal prison without eligibility for early parole.
As the bailiffs stepped forward to lead Marco away in heavy chains, he turned toward Andrea, his eyes filled with desperate, hollow tears.

“Andrea! Please!” he cried out as he was dragged toward the side door. “I’m sorry! Forgive me! Let me see Leo one last time!”
Andrea sat in the front row, holding her head high. She did not say a word. She did not offer him a single look of anger or pity. She simply watched as the man who had tried to ruin her life was led into the dark hallway of justice, never to hurt her family again.
