Chapter 1 - The Darkened Hall & The Gold Key

The sudden blackout hung over the vast mansion like a heavy velvet shroud. The echo of Serena’s voice, recorded in brutal clarity on Lily’s trembling phone, still lingered in the air, but the sudden extinction of the chandeliers swallowed the room in absolute darkness.
Lily lunged blindly toward where she had last seen little Ethan, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her fingers found the soft wool of his sweater. She pulled the four-year-old tightly into her chest, wrapping her body around him as a shield against whatever was lurking in the pitch-black hallway.
"Ethan, quiet, my sweet boy. I've got you," Lily whispered, her voice trembling.
"Daddy?" Ethan whimpered, burying his face in Lily’s shoulder, his little fingers clutching the collar of her white housekeeping apron.
"I'm right here," Victor’s voice cut through the dark—cold, razor-sharp, and completely devoid of panic.
A sharp, metallic click echoed near the grand staircase, followed by the muffled, frantic rustle of heavy silk. Serena’s heels clicked against the marble, not in her usual rhythmic, arrogant pace, but in erratic, desperate bursts.
"Serena!" Victor roared, stepping blindly toward the sound.
A door slammed shut in the distance—the heavy oak door leading to the estate's service tunnels. Then, with a low hum, the mansion’s backup generators kicked in. Wall sconces flickered to life, bathing the vast entrance hall in an eerie, pale amber glow.
Serena was gone.
The main entrance was still locked from the inside, but the access door to the lower subterranean levels stood wide open, swinging gently on its hinges in the cool draft blowing from beneath the house.
Victor stood at the center of the hall, his tailored coat thrown back, his chest heaving. His dark eyes darted across the floor, sweeping past the grand piano, the velvet draperies, and finally coming to rest near the bottom of the grand staircase.
There, gleaming under the faint emergency lighting, lay an object Serena must have dropped in her desperate scramble to escape into the darkness.
It was a key.
Not an ordinary iron key, nor a modern keycard used by the house staff. It was a heavy, ornate gold key, crafted with intricate Victorian filigree, its handle shaped in the likeness of a coiled serpent wrapped around a delicate lily.
Victor slowly approached the key and crouched down, his shadow stretching long across the polished marble. His jaw tightened as his fingers brushed the cold metal.
Lily stood up slowly, keeping Ethan pressed firmly against her side. "Mr. Vance... are you alright?"
Victor didn't answer immediately. He stared at the key in his hand, his eyes filled with a terrifying mix of grief and sudden, horrifying realization.
"This belonged to Victoria," Victor said quietly, his voice dangerously low. "My late wife."
Lily gasped softly. Victoria Vance had passed away four years ago under mysterious circumstances, shortly after giving birth to Ethan. Her private sanctuary—a third-floor room hidden behind the west library—had been locked ever since. Victor had forbidden anyone, including himself, from entering it, preserving it as a shrine to a woman he believed he had lost to sudden heart failure.
"Why would Serena have Victoria's private key?" Lily asked, taking a cautious step closer.
Victor stood up, his tall frame looming over the hallway. "Serena didn't just drop this while running, Lily. This key was hidden in her purse. She’s been going into Victoria’s room."

Before Lily could process the implication, Victor turned toward the stairs, the gold key gripped so tightly in his fist that his knuckles turned ghostly white.
"Bring Ethan," Victor commanded cold. "It’s time we find out what my late wife was really hiding from me... and what Serena was so desperate to destroy."
