Chapter 6 - Shadows from Above

A high-powered searchlight pierced the rain, locking its intense beam onto the driveway. The unmarked black helicopter hovered low over the treeline, blowing wet leaves and gravel across the estate grounds in a violent whirlwind.
"Drop your weapon!" a voice boomed from the helicopter’s megaphone.
Serena smirked through the mud and blood on her face. "That's my ride, Victor. Uncle Arthur sends his warm regards."
She fired two quick shots at Victor's feet, forcing him to take cover behind the stone gate pillar. Using the distraction, Serena scrambled up the steep muddy embankment toward the clearing where a rope ladder was being lowered from the aircraft.
"Serena!" Victor shouted, stepping out and firing three shots toward the ladder.
One bullet struck the metal rung just inches from Serena’s foot, but she clawed her way up with desperate strength, hauling herself into the open cabin of the helicopter.
The aircraft immediately banked hard into the storm clouds, its tail light disappearing into the thick grey haze over Lake Michigan within seconds.
Victor stood at the gate, his chest gasping for air, the cold rain soaking through his clothes to the bone. He lowered his gun, his mind spinning from the rapid succession of revelations.
Serena hadn't just been an ambitious mistress seeking wealth. She was the front facing agent of a massive corporate conspiracy orchestrated from within his own family.
He turned toward the guest cottage. The warm light inside offered a stark contrast to the darkness outside.
He marched up the porch steps and knocked on the heavy wooden door—three short taps, one long—the signal he had agreed upon with Lily.
Inside, Lily immediately unlatched the deadbolts and threw the door open. Seeing Victor covered in mud, rain, and minor cuts, her hands flew to her mouth.
"Victor! Are you hurt?!"
Without answering, Victor stepped inside, pulled Lily into his arms, and buried his face in the crook of her neck. He held her tight, his powerful frame trembling slightly from the sheer adrenaline and emotional exhaustion.
Lily froze in shock for half a second before wrapping her arms around his back, rubbing his rain-soaked coat gently.

"It's over for tonight," Lily whispered softly. "You're safe. Ethan is safe."
Victor pulled back, looking into Lily’s soft brown eyes. "It's not over, Lily. It’s much bigger than Serena. But I promise you... as long as I draw breath, no one will ever touch you or my son again."
