Chapter 2 - The Secret of the West Library

The third floor of the Vance estate was perpetually frozen in shadow. While the rest of the mansion had been modernized with glass, marble, and contemporary art, the West Wing remained a relic of the nineteenth century—dark mahogany walls, heavy velvet curtains, and the faint, lingering scent of old paper and dried lavender.

Lily held Ethan’s hand tightly as they followed Victor down the long corridor. The little boy was quiet now, his large blue eyes darting nervously toward the high ceilings.

"Lily," Ethan whispered softly. "Is the blue lady going to come back?"

"No, sweetheart," Lily reassured him, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of his head. "Your daddy is here now. No one will ever hurt you again."

Victor stopped in front of a massive bookcase at the far end of the West Library. He reached out and pushed aside a row of leather-bound encyclopedia volumes, revealing an old-fashioned brass keyhole concealed behind the wood.

He inserted the ornate gold key.

Click.

The mechanism inside turned with a heavy, grinding sound that vibrated through the floorboards. With a slow, groaning creak, the section of the bookcase swung outward, revealing a narrow, dust-choked doorway leading into a room that had been sealed for nearly half a decade.

Victor took a deep breath, stepped across the threshold, and clicked on the overhead light switch.

The room was bathed in a warm, dusty light. It was an elegant study, preserved perfectly in time. On the desk sat an unfinished letter, a silver fountain pen, and a crystal glass half-filled with dried, evaporated liquid.

"My God..." Victor murmured, walking slowly toward the desk.

Lily stepped inside, her eyes scanning the room. Unlike the rest of the cold estate, this room felt intimate, almost tragic. But as Lily’s gaze drifted toward the wall facing the desk, her breath caught in her throat.

The entire back wall was covered in photographs, medical records, bank statements, and hand-drawn diagrams, all connected by red string.

At the center of the web was a single photograph of Serena.

"Victor..." Lily gasped, pointing at the wall. "Look at this."

Victor rushed over, his eyes scanning the chaotic network of evidence. His face grew paler with every second.

Victoria hadn't died of sudden heart failure.

Pinned to the board was an official toxicology report from a private laboratory in Switzerland, dated three weeks before Victoria’s death. The paper was stamped with a bold red label: LITHIUM TARTATE & DIGITALIS POISONING.

Below it was a handwritten note in Victoria’s elegant script:

"Serena is slowly poisoning my daily vitamin injections. She thinks I don't notice the subtle tremors, the nausea, the failing vision. She wants my position. She wants Victor. But worst of all... she wants my unborn child's trust fund. If I do not survive the birth, Victor must never let Serena near the boy. She will finish what she started."

Victor stumbled backward, striking the edge of the desk. His hands flew to his face, a strangled sound tearing from his throat.

"She killed her..." Victor choked out, his voice cracking with immense agony. "My wife knew... she knew she was dying, and I... I thought she was just sick... I let Serena stay in this house!"
