Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Safe

The horror in the room was suffocating. Victor collapsed into the leather chair behind the desk, his chest heaving as years of carefully constructed grief shattered into absolute, blinding rage.

"Mr. Vance, please," Lily begged, walking over to him and placing a soft, comforting hand on his broad shoulder. "You didn't know. Serena manipulated everyone. She built a web of lies around you while you were drowning in grief."

Ethan trotted over to his father, pulling on Victor’s trousers. "Daddy, don't cry. Lily is here. We're safe."

Victor looked down at his son, tears gleaming in his eyes. He lifted Ethan into his lap, holding the boy against his chest with a protective intensity he had never shown before.

"I failed your mother, Ethan," Victor whispered into the boy's hair. "I won't fail you."

Suddenly, Lily noticed a metallic shadow hidden beneath the bottom shelf of the desk. She knelt down, reaching her hand into the narrow gap.

"There's a floor safe down here," Lily said, looking up. "The electronic keypad is still glowing green."

Victor frowned, wiping his eyes. "Victoria never told me about a floor safe in this room. The estate blueprints don't show one."

Lily looked at the keypad. "It requires a six-digit combination."

"Try Victoria’s birthday," Victor suggested, leaning forward. "October 14th—101488."

Lily entered the numbers. The keypad beeped three times with a low error chime. Red light flashed.

"Try the wedding anniversary," Lily offered. "June 22nd—062215."

Again, the error chime buzzed.

"Two attempts remaining," the digital screen warned in small red letters. "System lock in progress."

Victor racked his brain, his knuckles white. "What else could it be? She set this up while she was pregnant... while she was being poisoned..."

Lily looked down at little Ethan, who was playing with the silver fountain pen on the desk. Suddenly, an idea struck her.

"What about Ethan's predicted due date?" Lily asked softly. "Before she died, she knew he was coming."

Victor looked startled. "November 3rd. 110320."

Lily’s fingers hovered over the rubber keys. She pressed the digits carefully: 1 - 1 - 0 - 3 - 2 - 0.

A loud, mechanical CLACK rang out through the floorboards. The heavy steel door of the safe swung open smoothly.

Inside lay a single leather-bound journal and a high-capacity encrypted USB flash drive, labeled with a piece of faded masking tape: PROPERTY OF ETHAN VANCE - DO NOT OPEN UNTIL FULL AGE.

Lily reached in and pulled out the flash drive, handing it directly to Victor.

"This is the rest of it," Lily said, her pulse quickening. "Whatever Serena dropped the key for, she came back to destroy this."

Before Victor could respond, the mansion's main alarm system began to wail, its piercing siren echoing through the walls, accompanied by flashing red light from the library corridor outside.
